NHC Club Road Champs

Atawhai Circuit, Taradale

Napier Harriers held their Road Race Championships on the Atawhai circuit at Taradale on Saturday. Conditions were identical to last year, with ideal warm conditions and a slight nor-easter.
In the first race for 12 years and under the whole field lost valuable time when they got disorientated traversing the retirement village. Toa Elphick (8.08) steadily drew clear to win the Dally Family Cup by ten seconds from Charlie Chittenden and Ieaun Edmonds. Annie Creagh (8.14) produced another tremendous effort to win the girls title from Holly Edmonds (18.25) and Natasha Town-Warner.
In the 4km race, Laura Nagel (15.24) retained the Finlayson Cup with an outstanding run, finishing comfortably clear of the improving Larissa Street. Danielle Kiely (15.54) claimed the McKie Trophy for the Womens 16 grade. Jack Needes (14.21) won the Kevin Weatherley Memorial Cup, although chased the whole way by Brendan Speakman (14.31), while an improvers performance from Ben Fulton saw him claim third. Another exceptional run by Eric Speakman (13.14) saw him gain the upper hand over Cameron Poole-Smith (13.25) during the latter stages of the race and carried him to victory in the Duffy Cup contest for Boys 16 years and under. There was a lenghty gap to Patrick McGirr who was suffering from blisters back in third.
Ryan Woolley (16.04) outclassed the field to win the Curtis Cup over 4.92km. Steven Smith (17.59) returning to racing after a serious medical complaint claimed second ahead of Ryan Smith (19.00). Anne-Marie Earwicker won the senior women's crown (Jenkins Cup) and Shayna Heywood the Under 20 Womens grade. Marilyn Brown (22.10) dominated the masters women field to retain the Nichols Trophy, from Sheila Smidt (22.58) and Cheryl Simpson (23.22).
Provincial road champion Shane Vincent (33.51) was in tremendous form and waltzed away from the opposition to claim the Peter Tait Cup and smashed the Atawhai course record. Craig Mathers (36.16) suffered the effects of trying to keep in contact with Vincent and faded in the later stages of the race. Peter Gillies (38.08) making a rare appearance this season, snatched the Strachan Trophy (Masters Men) by five seconds after a tight tussle with Trevor Fulton. After challenging in the middle stages, Mark Speakman (38.44) fell off the pace to be third master home.
Napier Harriers made it a clean sweep in the interclub series by beating Hastings by 178-59. The club's sealed handicap champions for 2006 are Toa Elphick (NHC Trophy), Brendan Speakman (R.A.Smith Cup), Ryan Woolley (Tucker Tray), Marilyn Brown (Mortenson Family Shield) and Trevor Fulton (Peter Black Memorial Cup) while Laura Nagel and Danielle Kiely share the impressive Hooper Shield.
