In the third round of the Open Handicap series, Napier Harriers encountered a few boggy patches on the demanding Omaranui Road course, but overall the ground conditions allowed for good competition.
In the opening event Brendan Speakman (8.35) recorded fastest time to win a close contest by 5 seconds. Mitchell Turner finished second just 8 seconds ahead of Fraser Harris, who produced a gritty effort. The result ensured Speakman retained the open handicap trophy for another season.
Cameron Poole-Smith (16.19) got the better of his rivals to win the men's 16 years race. Eric Speakman finished 9 seconds adrift, while Michael Sullivan was unable to repeat his recent effort and settled for third another 20 seconds back.
Katie Harris (19.12) recorded a very smart time and was able to bridge the handicap advantage of her rivals. In a hectic sprint finish she nailed Laura Nagel on the line. Sarah Starkey finished third to keep her in the hunt on the points ladder, with Harris and Nagel.
Daniel Wallis gave Stefan Smith a 30 second start and caught him with 1 kms to run. Smith stuck like glue but Wallis (21.58) still had the superior sprint to win by a few metres.
Ashley Aitken scored another impressive win in the women's race. She recorded the quickest time (28.15) for 6km, as she swallowed up all her opposition and raced away to win by a staggering 1 minute 33 seconds. Although Marilyn Brown was 85 seconds quicker than last year, she had to settled for second, well clear of Shayna Heywood. The women's open handicap championship is now a head to head dual between Aitken and Brown.
The recent form of Steve Lindsay was re-emphasized with another victory in the senior mens race over 9kms. Lindsay (42.04) won easily by 38 seconds, after catching pacesetter Stu Mckie with a kilometre to go. Mckie held on gamely to repeat last year's runner-up effort, while Frank Busch (38.42) produced the fastest time in securing third place. The victory has catapulted Lindsay to the top of the points ladder although Busch will not relinquish his rights to the cup easily.
