Memorial Road Race
16 October, 2004
Top Napier veteran Shane McCormack won the 24km Memorial Road Race on Saturday. McCormack and Craig Mathers lead the field through the suburbs and over the Poraiti Hill to Puketapu. A warm whistling westerly made for trying conditions and Mathers established a small break on McCormack by half way, with 400 metres back to Peter Gillies. McCormack took control on Omaranui Road, establishing a decisive 100 metre break by the 18km mark. With Mathers taking his legendary detour through the Tutaekuri River, McCormack won The Memorial Cup by an exaggerated margin. Gillies held on gamely for third just ahead of Mark Speakman and Craig Eustace. Renowned marathoner Marion Sherburn lead home the women, doubling her advantage on a struggling Elly Govers over the last 6kms. Rebecca Young was the third woman to finish.
Craig Mathers won the Arthur Lord Trophy for the sealed handicap competition. In a very close contest he won by just 25 seconds from Sherburn, with McCormack another 16 seconds adrift, while Gillies was a total of 51 seconds away from gaining the prestigious trophy.
The cup for the four person relay contest was won by Mark Speakman, his sons Eric and Brendan and anchored by Arthur Corbett. This year our race clashed with the Lydaird Track and Field Meeting in Hastings and removed several potential relay teams from entering.
