AHBG ROAD RELAY
22 May, 2004
The Hastings Harrier Club United re-emphasized their domination of the local running scene by winning both sections of the Hawke's Bay-Gisborne Road Relay Championship on Saturday afternoon. Pleasingly the event attracted good entries with twenty-two teams tackling the demanding 26.3km Apley Road circuit.
The strong Hastings men's team took line honours in 1hr 28mins 30secs, a decisive 3 minutes 53 seconds ahead of the Napier Harriers. There was a 9 minute gap to a great scrap for third between two H.B. Multi Sport selections, with the younger members prevailing by a slender 27 seconds over their counterparts at the finish.
The Hastings squad of Josh Barber (19.08), Neville Smith (23.10), Michael Newton (16.31), Iain Murray (17.07) and Mike Fleming (12.34) all recorded the fastest time on their respective legs of the race. Likewise Napier members Kevin Fisher (19.41), Craig Mathers (24.54), Mark Speakman (16.55), Shane McCormack (17.58) and Craig Eustace (12.55) all had second fastest times and therefore couldn't reverse the spiralling advantage secured by the Hastings team.
The Hastings women's selection of Amber Morrison, Andrea Williams, Claire Burnard, Julia Trautvetter and Lisa Blakey displayed commitment and strength in winning their race by a staggering 5 minutes and 39 seconds in 1hr 51mins 41secs.
Any prediction that the young Napier women's team would be a threat was blown away before the race reached halfway. Playing their ace card Morrison (22.23) on the first leg, Hastings were presented with a massive advantage when Morrison broke the junior lap record. Although Napier's Ashley Aitken (31.28) created another new junior record on the second leg, she was blown away by her Hastings adversary. Williams (29.36) and Burnard (20.10) recorded the fastest times on their legs as Hastings established an unassailable lead. On the fourth leg, Napier's Laura Smidt(22.30) reversed the trend and managed to move her team ahead of the gutsy team from Havelock North H.S. for the first time. Laura Mohi(15.03) competing for Hastings B recorded the quickest time on the final leg, expressing a desire for promotion in the near future. Napier women finished second 2mins 34secs ahead of Havelock North H.S.
Special mention for top efforts go to a talented teenage quartet, Amanda Gorst(22.41) on the opening leg, Ryan Woolley(25.43) on the second, Eric Speakman(17.46) on the third leg and David Morton(13.30) on the anchor leg. The standout performance on the fourth leg came from 11 year old Brendan Speakman(21.09).
After the Napier Harrier Club chose to run their youngsters in their relay teams, Hastings Harriers made it a clean sweep by winning the special teams race over 3.5km in both the boys and girls sections.
