GLOSSARY

 

 

 

Truck -

The device at the top of an outdoor pole, below the finial (staff ornament), and to which the ornament is mounted. Usually a wooden or metal block. It houses the pulley wheel or holes for the halyard.

 

TUDOR CROWN -

See CROWN.

 

Union -

Is any design that symbolizes unity. It may appear in the canton, as the stars do in the U.S. flag. Or it may be the entire flag, as in the Union Flag of the United Kingdom.

 

UNION FLAG  -

The abbreviated name of the ROYAL UNION FLAG.

 

UNION JACK -

The common and informal name of the ROYAL UNION FLAG.

 

VAIR -

In heraldry, a fur.

 

VERT -

In heraldry, the colour green. The colour most often associated with Moslem’s. Traditionally the prophet Mohammed’s favourite colour.

 

Vexilloid -

A rigid sign carried on a pole, especially those used by the classical Roman’s as unit identifiers. One of the forerunners of modern flags. Vexillum derives from the verb vehere, to “carry”.
