GLOSSARY

The central
element of an ACHIEVEMENT OF ARMS. SIGNAL FLAGS -
A set of flags
used to signify letters and numbers, hoisted to communicate between ships at
sea, and formerly for military forces on land. Now often used primarily for
decoration. Single/Reverse -
A flag which
reads correctly from the front and reverse from the rear. SLEEVE -
The heading of a
flag sown so as to slip over a flagpole. This is often used for flags which
are displayed indoors or on parade. Snap Hook -
A device used to
attach a flag to the halyard (rope) on a flagpole. Staff -
Is a pole a flag
hangs on. Staff -
The pole used to
support a flag especially when carried. STANDARD -
A flag around
which people rally, in peace or war. 1) Today, the
term usually refers to the personal flag or ARMORIAL BANNER of an important
person or ruler, such as the Royal Standard of the Sovereign. 2) The term is
also applied to some colours used in the armed forces. An identifying flag,
equivalent to a colour, carried by mounted or similar units. In the U.S.
Army, a regimental flag used by cavalry regiments (obsolete). 3)
A flag based on a heraldic shield. |
