GLOSSARY

REGIMENTAL COLOUR -
See COLOUR. Roped -
A flag with a
rope passing through the heading and looped and secured at each end. The
halyard of the flagpole is then attached to the loops. Normally used only for
large outdoor flags. ROUNDEL -
A circular or
quasi-circular disc placed upon a flag. The roundel is sometimes used to
provide an appropriate background for a flag badge. Sometimes the badge
itself is in the form of a roundel. ROYAL CREST -
A crowned lion standing on a
crowned helmet. Technically described as “upon the royal helmet an imperial crown proper, thereon
statant gardant Or, a lion statant imperially crowned also proper”. ROYAL STANDARD -
The ARMORIAL
BANNER of the Royal Arms. It formed the only personal flag of the sovereign
until supplemented in 1960 by the QUEEN’S PERSONAL FLAG and by the Queen’s
Personal Flag’s for New Zealand and other Dominions of the Queen. ROYAL UNION FLAG -
This flag is used
to represent allegiance to the Sovereign and membership in the British
Commonwealth. It served as the national flag of New Zealand between 1840 and
