See CROWN. NATIONAL FLAG -
In general is a
flag representing an independent state, especially a nation-state. Although
the term is chiefly applied to the flag used by both government and private
citizens, either on land or at sea, it is sometimes restricted to a flag used
by the former. A national flag may also be used for one or more of these
additional functions: CIVIL ENSIGN, CIVIL FLAG, STATE ENSIGN, STATE FLAG, WAR
ENSIGN, WAR FLAG. National flags are among the most recent types of flags.
They first came into use during the early 1700's. Until then most flags were
the emblem of rulers. Some national flags may not be flown by private
citizens, and are still regarded as representing the state or state
institutions rather than the country. Ironically this attitude is most commonly
founds in republics. NAVAL ENSIGN -
