Field -

The background (predominant colour) of a flag.

 

FIMBRIATION -

Is a narrow line separating two other colours in a flag. Often used to avoid two metals touching.

 

FINIAL -

The ornament on the end of a flagstaff or flagpole.

 

FLAG -

A piece of cloth or other pliable material, which, being fastened only along one edge (or occasionally two) to a staff or cord, is free to move in the wind. Varying in size, shape, colour, and design. Used to signal, to communicate identity, or as the symbol of a nation, state, or organization. See also BANNER; ENSIGN; PENNANT; STANDARD.

 

FLAG HOIST -

Is a group of signal flags attached to the same halyard and hoisted as a unit.

 

Flagpole -

The pole on which a flag is hoisted; sometimes referred to as mast or flagstaff.

 

Flash Collar -

A decorative cover used at the base of an outdoor flagpole.

 

FLEURDELISÉ -

Any flag prominently featuring the fleur-de-lis. Examples include the old royal flag of France, and the present provincial flag of Quebec.
