| When this medical report was done, I was not privy to any information it contained. The Doctor had sealed the report in an envelope and that was the way it had to remain until being opened at this interview. Obviously, it stated that I was clear of any malady or disability. A slow expulsion of breath from me.........whew! Knowing that I was reasonably healthy, I hadn't been too worried, but, one never knows what a sealed envelope holds. A few questions from the officer, nothing like we expected and which were easily answered, and I was congratulated. I was now a Resident, a "conditional resident" but a resident nonetheless. The "conditional" means that our dealings with Immigration are not quite over. As Mike and I have been married for less than two years, at a date set in the future, we have to apply to have the "conditional" removed. Though just a formality, it, naturally, commands an accompanying fee. One consolation is that this does not require our appearance in the office, it can be done by mail. On the way out, I looked at the security guard who had confiscated my scissors. Feeling I had nothing to lose, I approached him. Putting on my whiniest voice, I asked if I could please have them back, promising to never bring them into the building again. I must have caught him at a good moment, he went over to the basket containing the items confiscated during the day, (just what do they do with it all?? Garage sale material?) and returned with my scissors. With thanks given, Mike and I left the building, planning on never entering it's doors again! |
| While this has been our experience with Immigration, I acknowledge that not everyone has endured the same treatment while persuing Residency. I am also aware that different offices have different requirements and procedures. It was unfortunate that our "local" office is one of the bigger ones and, while I acknowledge that the staff are probably swamped with a continual stream of applications of all types, this does not excuse them for attitude, and treament, towards would be immigrants. |
