San Francisco
Memorial day weekend 2000 - Cam and I did a mission around the Bay area for 3 days.....San Jose was pretty ordinary, but Santa Cruz and San Francisco were both a lot of fun - here are some snaps from the weekend.
I will get this one out of the way early......yes, that is me - and that bridge is known as the "Golden Gate Bridge". Not because it is golden (it is International Orange!!), or a gate.....but because the entrance to the harbour is known as the Golden Gate - and this bridge goes over it......fascinating I know....you can thank me later.
A tall, pointy, famous building!!
This is a shot of many sea lion type creatures down at the pier....you don't get the noise or stink with the photo - but I can assure you it was impressive.
Thanks to Cam's forward thinking we booked a trip to "The Rock" aka Alcatraz...here we are in the middle of the bay....hope we make it
This is taken from the recreation yard where many of the prisoners passed the time playing 'hide the sharp, pointy piece of glass'. (Just as well they don't play hide the tall, pointy, famous building). This game was still apparently more comfortable than the ones they played in the showers though.
Looking back to the city from Alcatraz - nice view...but not worth a week in the hole

This was not an official part of the tour - but when you gotta go.....
This is one of the cells that the guys escaped from...look at the back wall to see the hole they made. This was the event that the movie 'Escape from Alcatraz' is based on....that is Clint Eastwood in the bed - what a star.
The Bay Bridge...which links San Fran with Oakland. It spans 5 times the distance of the "Golden Gate Bridge" and was completed 6 months earlier. But it is somehow nowhere near as famous....probably because of the boring name and the fact it is not 'International Orange'. About the most famous thing it did was drop a section on a car in an earthquake and pancake some unfortunate motorist.
