| Back in early November 2000 Peter ventured south to explore the rivers of his youth in Southland. What follows is a brief summary of the trip. Peter was joined by Richard Butler, a friend (and good fisherman) from Dunedin. |

| Over the 5 days we had glorious weather and saw many trout. We only managed to catch 15 between us (6 to 9 in Richard's favour!) but we also lost quite a few and missed the strike with even more. All in all we had a great time exploring the Mataura, Eglinton, Otamita and Otapiri rivers plus visits to Hamilton Burn and Dipton Creek. One or 2 of the highlights (and lowlights) were: someone casting repeatedly to what turned out to be a sunken plastic bag (and not a double digit brown), Peter falling and breaking his fly rod on the first afternoon, catching some nice fish in typical Mataura backwaters plus Richard hooking and losing a fish (that appeared to be asleep) with only 2 feet of line out the tip of the rod.  Photos --> |
