Plains Rangers AFC

6 April 2002 v Kawerau

Plains Rangers began their campaign in BOP division two with a home fixture against Kawerau.

Both teams took a while to settle and there were a number of chances unconverted at both ends of the park. Eventually Rangers got some combinations sorted out and the football flowed a little better. It was thirty minutes before a goal was scored. Excellent work by livewire Joel Ogilvy had him round the Kawerau keeper and pull the ball back for debutante Ryan Wilson in front of goal. Wilson did well to squeeze his shot past three defenders and into the net. Kawerau came back before half time and converted a quick break. The game was locked at a goal apiece at the interval.

The second half saw both teams battling for supremacy, and despite a majority of possession, Rangers could not find their way through the packed defence easily. After a number of chances, it was again Ryan Wilson who found the key and unlocked the defence with a good run to score. Rangers then had a case of deja vu when they allowed their visitors to get away from the defence to equalise. Rangers then lost newcomer Mark Oldham, and with no sideline replacements, did not have the resources to regain their lead. Although Ashley Hawkes went within centimetres with a powerful angled shot. The final score Plains Rangers 2, Kawerau 2.

Rangers showed glimpses of good passing and will be a strong team in this league when they find consistency. Oldham was named player of the day for his whole hearted effort. This Saturday Rangers are away to Otumoetai.
