Plains Rangers AFC
May 18th 2002 v Taupo Youth
Plains Rangers came away from Taupo with a comfortable win in their BOP division two game on Saturday.
The young home team battled throughout, but were often beaten to the ball by the Rangers players. Rangers played into a steady breeze in the first half. Joel Ogilvy at right half provided plenty of go forward, and his good work led to the first goal, with a neat finish from Bas Overdevest after fifteen minutes. Five minutes later Overdevest scored again and Rangers decided to concentrate on maintaining a good standard of football. Ryan Wilson was the next to put the ball in the net, then Rangers were unfortunate to lose their skipper Simon Ruiter. Goalkeeper Ruiter was injured in stopping a Taupo attack. He was replaced in goal by centre back Daniel Overdevest. Substitute Josh Van Veen's direct running brought him a goal to bring the half time score to 4 - 0.
The second half's main battle for Rangers was to keep their standards up. This commenced in brilliant fashion, when player of the day Sjoerd Overdevest blasted a scorcher into the goal from the edge of the penalty area. The excellent Taupo goalkeeper would not have wanted to get in behind it, even if he had seen it coming! From there on the quality of play varied, but periodically Rangers saw their way through to goal. Wilson completed his hat-trick, while Brendan Cusack and Van Veen also scored. The result Taupo 0, Plains Rangers 9. Credit must go to the young Taupo team, who never stopped trying. Rangers will look forward to their local derby this Saturday against Whakatane, which should be a even affair. The game will be at Rex Morpeth Park at 2 p.m.
