| The Patriotism Rage | ||||||||
| As the cool, fall wind blows, American flags fixed to neighborhood homes flutter, and remind us that our national symbol still carries a meaning. American can still represent a country where freedom, liberty, and equality dominate our society. But now we are left with one question, has patriotism become a trend? Sadly, it seems that it has. Since the attack on America on September 11, 2001, flag makers, belt-buckle designers, and T-shirt manufacturers have become more important each day. Demand for patriotic items has risen in unforeseen amounts. People rushed out to the stores nearest their homes and purchased anything that represented their idea of patriotism. Soon, an entire nation joined the Revolution of America, and we all found a new reason to love our country: cool bumper stickers. Can this lack of action be named patriotism? Or does it require more heart to make an example of how one may love their country? While driving, one may notice stickers that show a mug shot of bin Laden with bold writing under his name stating, 'COWARD,' but what are those people doing to prove that bin Laden is in fact a coward? Sticks and stones may break bones, but words will never hurt anyone. It takes more than a bad attitude and a belt buckle to show opposing nations that America is not one to attack. Americans do not stand idle in the face of fear, but will stand for what they believe in, no matter what the cost. Contrary to what other nations say, America is undeniably one of the greatest countries in the world. Our holistic views of freedom and democracy allow for people of all nationalities to enter with open arms. But the one question remains; will they accept us as we accept them? According to the American Heritage Dictionary, a patriot is 'a person who loves, supports, and defends his country.' Meaning that actions speak louder than words when it comes to one's nation, and what it means to you. A look to the local Armed Forces recruiter is a good solution if a person is looking for one. Today, it seems that our patriotism trend continues to grow. New patriotic emblems are being created while the populace continues to buy them. Each day, more and more Americans are accepting their nation for what it is, their home. |

| This article was the first piece of editorial writing that I ever had the opportunity to work on. It was also the article I had to fix the most because of my ignorance of the low reading level shared amongst newspapers. I wrote to tell my audience of patriots that love for one's country requires more than buying new merchandise, it takes action and devotion. Everyday after Sept 11, I would drive around and see 16 (yes, I truly counted the same number everyday for a week) of those bin Laden 'COWARD' stickers on the back of cars and it drove me insane to see such a pronounced public label. If a person takes the incentive to call someone a coward, they better be ready to proove that they are not one themself. The unity formed after 9-11 was incredible; however, it's a shame that it took an event that drastic to wake us up. | ||||||||
