A New Beginning Part 2

It's been six months since Joshua and Rita has been seeing each other. They've been 
spending alot of time together, trying to get to know one another again and just enjoying 
each other's company. However, although they agreed to take things relatively slow, Josh 
couldn't help but fall in love with her all over again. The slightest thing she did would
make him just stare in awe. The way she would push her hair behind her ear or innocently smile 
while sleeping would give him gooesbumps. He was extremely happy to have this woman in his 
life once again, but one thing always lingered in the back of his mind....would he be able to 
keep her.

Lights dazzled and shimmered in the eyes of what seemed to be the happiest couple in the world. 
Connie and Andy had finally tied the knot while surrounded by their family and closest friends. 
Everyone in the room seemed to be on cloud nine, they were all dancing, talking and everyone just 
seemed to have a smile on their face, everyone that is, but John. 

"Hey" Rita said as she walked up behind John 

"Hey" he replied snapping out of his meditation.

"You okay? You've been a bit quiet tonight and (smiling) that's certainly not you"

Smiling back "I just have some things on my mind that's all"

"Anything you want to talk about?"

"I don't want to bother you with my problems"

"You're not bothering me, I offered" she said placing her hand on his shoulder, "Plus...we're 
friends aren't we?"

"Yeah we are"

"Good, now that we've gotten that settled, what's on your mind?"

"Well (looking uncomfortable)....I've been thinking about my dad alot lately. I mean I dream about him alot and everything just seems to remind me of him"

"Well that's understandable. Next week is going to be a year since he died, it's only normal that you think about him. Have you spoken to Jennifer about it?

"I guess I mentioned it, but she doesn't seem to get it...well not the way you do anyways."
Puzzled by his choice of words "Really?"

"Yeah really.. I mean last year when everything went wrong you were always there, ready to do whatever you could to help"

"That's funny, you didn't seem this appreciative in the heat of the moment"

"I know and I'm really sorry about that. I guess I was more concentrating on everything that was going wrong instead of looking at and appreciating what was going right....appreciating you."

Rita suddenly got an airy feeling in the pit of her stomach as John spoke these. However trying to remain cool she replied "That's really nice of you to say John but it's really not necessary, both of us have moved on haven't we....no hard feelings?"

"Have we really?"

"Yeah.... we have"

"Well for whatever it's worth (walking towards her)...I'm sorry. 

He then takes her into his arms and holds her closely. 

Just then Joshua walks into the room and based on the look on his face he was less than happy to see them in that position.

"What's going on here?" he said softly

"Josh, hi" she said pushing John away

"I asked what's going on here"

"Nothing, let's go back inside and join the party"

Josh reluctantly followed Rita back into the party as 

John watched, but this conversation was not over, not by a long shot. 


Back at Rita's Apartment

On entering 

"That was a really nice wedding. I'm really happy for them."

"We need to talk" ignoring her statement

"About what?" 

"You know about what"

"If you're talking about me and John there's no need...nothing is going on"

Becoming upset "Nothing's going on? I walk in and find you in your ex boyfriend's arm and nothings going on?"

"He's just going through a bad time right now and needed a friend"

"So you're telling me that at a party of over 20 people, you're the only person that could've been there for him?"

Walking pass him "Josh you're being ridiculous" 

Holding her back "Why is it that you think you always have rescue him?"

"I don't!" she bellowed "He's my friend Josh"

"Your friend? Are you sure that's all he is?"

"What's that suppose to mean?"

"You act like you're still in love with him"

"What?!" she shouted "We. Are. Friends. That's all."

" Then look me in the eyes and tell me that you're not in love with him anymore" he yelled.

"I'm in love with you"

"That's not what I asked you to say Rita"

"Josh...don't do this"

"Don't do what...huh? Try to prevent myself from getting hurt again? I went through this with you and Don, but I refuse to go through it again with John...(softening his voice) regardless of how much I love you." 

"I won't do that to you Josh."

"You know you still haven't said what I want to hear."

Rita just stood without saying a word. Suddenly tears started to form in her eyes.

Smiling in disappointment. "I guess that says it all right?"

Joshua then turns and heads for the door.

"Where are you going?" Rita said trying to fight back her tears.

"Out of your life...you're obviously still in love with him...you can have him. Who the hell am I to stand in your way?"

Running to catch him before he exits the door. "Josh please don't go..please" she cried as the tears ran down her face.

Trying to fight back his tears he pulls his hand away from hers and exits the door.

"Josh! Josh!" 


~*~ Rita and Connie are both in the squad car waiting to pick up a pros for a case Baldwin and Greg are working on~*~

"Hey partner, you ok?" Connie asks concerned "You've been quiet all day"

"I'm fine." 

"Are you sure, cause you're not acting like it"

"Yeah" she rethinks her answer "I mean no..no I'm not" she tries to fight back her tears " I really screwed up things with Joshua."

"How? What happened?"

"Well you know that he got pissed after what happened the other night"

"Yeah I know but..he trusts you doesn't he"

"Well he did, but I'm not sure how he feels right now. The other night was....it was horrible. He accuse me of still being in love with John"

"You told him that you weren't right?"

"He wanted me to say that but I couldn't. I don't know why but I couldn't."

"So what did he say?" 

"He told me that he going out of my life so that he won't be the way of John and I getting back together."

"Do you want to get back together with John?" Connie asked curiously

"No! I don't...I mean if you had asked me that question a few months ago I would've said yes, but I'm in love with Josh now...but I guess I still care about John."

"Nothing's wrong with you caring for him."

"Oh no...then why did it just cost me my relationship with Joshua?"

"Joshua loves you Rita. I've seen the way he looks at you...the way he acts when he's around you..he's just scared and confused right now. Give him time...he'll come around."

"I hope so. You should've seen the look on his face. It was like I broke his heart all over again"

"Well maybe you should get everything straightened out with John before you talk to Joshua.. I mean you gotta convince yourself you're not in love with him before you can convince Josh."

"You're right"

Suddenly something else caught Rita's attention

"Hey we got to go. There's our girl."


~*~*~*On exiting the car*~*~*~

"Baby Doll!" Connie yelled in her tough cop voice

"Hey pal, beat it" she said to the guy Baby doll was trying to pick up.

"Can we have a moment of your time?"

"My time is precious detectives." the prostitute said 

"I bet it is...but this will only take a minute." Connie said .

"Where were you last night at about 10:30?" Rita asked

"I was at home."

"Really? Cause we have a witness that told us different"

"Someone told us that they saw you running down Avenue A, around that same time, scared stiff"

"Yeah....like you saw something that you wasn't suppose to see" Rita added

"Well that person's lying, I didn't see anything and I wasn't running down any street."

"Oh really?"

"Yeah really...all you got is a he said she said. You have no proof about it so you can't take me in"

"How about that Jon you were just trying to pick up?'

"Pick up? Do I look like a whore to you?"

"Actually..yeah you do." Connie said snapping back

"Look (trying to think up an excuse)..that guy wanted some condoms so I was going to sell him some."

"( Rita rolling her eyes)Yeah...and then you were going to give him a free demonstration right...(pulling her by her arm) Come on."


~*~*~*Later that night at Rita's apartment*~*~*~

Rita hears a knock on the door. She runs to it desperately hoping that it was Josh but was stunned 
to find John standing on the other side.

"Hey. What are you doing here?"

"Hi...I was in the neighbourhood so I just thought that I would stop by. Ahhh...can I come in?"

"Oh yeah...sorry"

"Are you ok...you seem a bit distant"

Smiling "Yeah..I guess you can say I have some problems of my own" she replied trying to hide 
her emotions

"Did your problems start because of me?"

"Ahh...no, they didn't"

"Well...I'm really sorry to hear about you and Josh regardless"

"Thanks. And to think it was for nothing"

"Was it? I mean what if he hadn't walked it...what would've happened?"

Feeling a bit uncomfortable "Probably nothing...right?"

John then reached forward and gently touched her cheek. "You have no idea how much I wanted to kiss you"

Moving away. "John don't"

"I'm sorry if I'm making you feel uncomfortable but I'm having these feelings again and I'm not sure 
what to do with them"

"Feelings?"

"Yeah...it's like I'm falling in love with you all over again. (Awkward silence) But you know what's funny?

"What?" Rita said softly

"It's like I didn't know how good I had things until I didn't have them anymore. During these past moths I've finally realized how good I truly had it...with you"

"John I don't know what to say"

Walking towards her "You don't have to say anything"

John then leaned forward and gently kissed her on her soft lips. He then stopped for a second and stared into her eyes, and just for a moment started to feel the way he did six months ago, however, when he leaned forward to kiss her once again, he was greeted by nothing but air.

"John I can't do this"

"Why not... because of Joshua?"

"Yes. I love him John"

"And you feel nothing for me?"

"I care about you John, but beyond that, I don't feel anything." she said as a tear ran down her cheek. " 

John six months ago you meant everything to me. I would've walked to the end of the earth and back if it made you happy...but that wasn't enough for you."

"Yes it was. I loved you so much Rita...I still do, it's just that I couldn't deal with being with you 
and handling my dad's death at the same time. I'm sorry" 

"Sorry isn't enough right now John. There are more people involved here than just me and you, there's Josh, and to be honest, right now I choose him."

"I guess I deserved that right?"

"I'm not doing this to hurt you John, that's the last thing I want to do but, I got to think about 
myself for once."

"I understand...but we're still friends right?" he said disappointed

"Of course" she said taking him into her arms

"Josh is a lucky man" he said smiling at her "Well I better go. See you tomorrow."

As he was opening the door "Hey....are we ok?"

"We're fine" he replies just before he exits the apartment


~*~*Joshua's Pent House*~*~
Josh opens his door after hearing a knock, to find Rita standing on the other side

Rita: Hi

Joshua: What are you doing here?

Rita: I need to talk to you

Joshua: I think we said all there is to say

Rita: (walking past him) I disagree.

Joshua: Rita what are you trying to prove.

Rita: (ignoring him) You know I don't get you. You said that you love me but yet you're ready to give 
up on us so easily. So is this how far your love goes...one mistake and you're ready walk away. 
(Awkward Silence) Say something!

Joshua: What do you want me to say..huh!? That I love you? That I want to spend every minute with 
you? That the thought of me losing you again breaks my heart? Well I won't say it.... (softening his 
voice) because you already know its true.

Rita: (Tears settling in her eyes) If it is true then why are you pushing me away?

Joshua: Because I don't want to be hurt again. This seems way too familiar to me Rita.

Rita: Josh, it was much different before. I was young, foolish and angry at you for leaving me. 
I wanted to show you that I didn't need to be with you in order to be happy... the way you 
didn't need me to happy.

Joshua: I moved on...that doesn't mean I was happy

Rita: That's what I wanted to do too, but all I did was get involved in a marriage that was doomed 
to fail. Don't get me wrong, I loved Don, but the way I felt for him could come close to the way I 
felt for you....the way I still feel for you.

Joshua: So what about when it comes to John.

Rita: John had and he threw me away...but I want to be honest with you. Tonight he came by my apartment.

Joshua: Really?

Rita: Yeah, and I think you can guess what he wanted.

Joshua: That son-of-a-

Rita: (cutting him off) But nothing happened.... He started to tell me how loved me and missed me 
and wanted me to came back and then....then he kissed me...but all the time he was doing this, 
all I could've think of was you. (Beginning to cry) Baby I love you so much and I don't know what I'll do if I lose you again.

Joshua: Rita...

Rita: (with the tears streaming down her face) I don't love John, I don't, and I'll say it as 
many times as you want me to, just don't walk away from me, please. 

Josh couldn't stand to see the woman he loved hurt any longer, just the sight of her crying 
seemed to make him weak. He wanted to comfort her, to hold her, but the fear of him getting 
hurt again kept pulling him back. As he gazed at her, tears begining to form in his eyes, he 
wondered if he should risk it, risk getting hurt, risk getting his heart broken. Was she worth it?...
After all he has loved her ever since he knew how to love. He then decided to himself that yes, yes 
she's worth and he is going to fight to keep her. No matter who he has to go up against, this is 
the woman he wants, the woman he loves and the woman he is going to keep. 

Joshua: Baby don't cry, you know I hate to see you cry. (Taking her into his arms and holding 
her close) I'm not walking anywhere, not if you don't want me to.

Rita: (She then took her head from his shoulder and looked straight into his baby blue eyes) Well I don't want you to.

Joshua then gently wiped the sparkling tear form Rita's cheek. They both then fell into each other's 
eyes, and for the first time in a long time, each of them really felt secured in their relationship. 
Joshua then leaned forward and kissed Rita's moist lips. As she returned this breathtaking kiss, her hand slowly began to raise his shirt higher and 
higher over his head until you could see nothing but his firm, sexy chest. Josh then picked Rita up 
into his strong, muscular arms and as she wrapped her legs around his waste, the both of them disappeared into the bedroom, where they spent the most intense and heated night of their lives.
