A New Beginning

Since we never really got a lot of information about Rita, the purpose of this fanfic is to, in a way, give a larger background. 

Scene 1

Connie and Rita were on a case which had both of them on edge. They were investigating a series of murders which involved female victims under the age of 15. Along with this dreadful case the detectives also carried the worry of their hurt lieutenant upon their shoulders. Rita Ortiz seemed to be taking his injuries harder than anyone else because at the back of her mind she couldn't help but wonder if she could've some how prevented it. However her terrible day was somewhat brightened when she ran into an old high school sweetheart, Joshua Santana, while investigating. Joshua is a handsome Puerto Rican with short dark curly hair, a muscular body and has the most adorable dimples which occur at each cheek when he smiles. 

Joshua: Rita?

Rita: Joshua? Oh my God, Hi.(As they approached one another and embraced, a smile came across Connie's face.)

Joshua: Hola! How long has it been, 3 years?

Rita: Yeah. Almost?Joshua: So how have you been? Last time I heard, you were a top notch cop in OCCB Vice.

Rita: (smiling) Yeah.I use to work in vice, but I don't know about top notch cop part. Pretending to be a prostitute wasn't exactly the high light of my day.

Joshua: (smiling) I imagine it wouldn't be.

Rita: Ohh (Realizing she was being a bit rude) I would like you to meet Det. Connie McDowell. This is Joshua Santana (speaking to Connie)He and I went to school together.

Connie: Nice to meet you

Joshua: Yeah same here.

Connie: (wanting to give them privacy) Uhh... I'm going to go get the car. 

Rita: Yeah okay..I'll be right there.

Connie: It was nice meeting you Joshua.

Joshua: You too. (looking at Rita) You don't know how many times I picked up the phone to call you, and I only recently heard about Don I'm so sorry about that.

Rita: That's okay.. I'm a big girl! (holding down her head)I got over it. Plus, you are a busy man.

Joshua: Yeah but that's no excuse. You were always determined to survive no matter what weren't you?

Rita: What else can I do, you know? Ahh. I'm really sorry to have to cut this conversation short Josh but duty calls.

Joshua: Yeah okay. Ahh..You think we can see each other tonight? We can catch up on lost time.

Rita: (Thinking for a second) Yeah why not? Sounds like it would be fun.

Joshua: Then it's a date! Well not a real date.. (babbling) ..You know what I mean.

Rita: (Smiling) Yeah, I'll see you tonight

They exchange cards and Rita departs


Scene 2 Inside the female locker room at the 15th precinct.

Connie: Hey

Rita: Hey. Did John and Andy get him to go?

Connie: Yeah they did..Ahh, John also called the hospital but there's no change in Lt.'s condition. 

Rita: I'm sorry to hear that (a sign of worry returned to her face)

Connie: Ahh Rita, we're friends right? ....Cause I consider you to be much more than just my partner.

Rita: Of course we're friends Connie.

Connie: So why are you holding out on me.

Rita: (Oblivious to what she is talking about) Holding out on you? What do you mean?

Connie: (Her tone suddenly changes) I mean that gorgeous Puerto Rican you were hugging earlier. Please tell me has a twin.

Rita: (laughing) Boy I wish your fiance could hear you now.

Connie: (laughing back) You know I'm just kidding, but come on, who is he?

Rita: I told you! we use to go to school together.

Connie: And...

Rita: And what?

Connie: Rita, I've seen people I went to school with before, and trust me when I say that I've never received a greeting anything close to the one he gave you.

Rita: (smiling) Well...he's friendly.

Connie: Oh please Rita.

Rita: Well if you must know detective..Josh and I use to date in high school and then a little in college.

Connie: Really? And you're still friends?

Rita: Yeah, Probably because it wasn't really a messy break up. He got offered a really huge job in Paris and since his family kind of needed the money, it would've been stupid not to take it. (smiling) I guess it was a good thing he took it though, because now he owns Corps International.

Connie: He's an architect?

Rita: Yea...He even designed Celine Dion's coliseum. 

Connie: What! So let me get this straight.. He's cute, sexy, independent and rich. So are you seeing him again? (smiling)

Rita: I told him that I would have dinner with him tonight but I'm kind of having second thoughts.

Connie: What? Why?

Rita: The whole John issue.

Connie: Rita incase you haven't noticed, John is moving on and seems to be having a grand time with the good old doctor, and based on what I've been noticing the last two week he doesn't seem to be caring about you feelings at all. Don't get me wrong Rita, John is my friend and I care about him a lot! But you're my partner, and my friend, so in my book you come before him any day. You really got to start thinking about yourself and try to forget about him.

Rita: Yea...I know.

Connie: So you're going to give Joshua a chance? You don't have anything to lose..Plus, if he hurts you, I'll be on his ass.

Rita: (laughing) I'll tell him you said that Connie.

Connie: Yeah

Rita: Thank you....for everything.

Connie: Any time. You're my partner so I'll be here whenever you need me. You're stuck with me kid.

Rita: (smiling) I wouldn't have it any other way! (placing her hand on Connie's) cause you're stuck with me to.

The two detectives then shared a friendly hug and returned to work.


Scene 3 

For dinner Joshua took Rita to an elegant French restaurant. 

Rita: (As she looked through the menu) I love this restaurant. The food here is really good.

Joshua: (A little surprise that she was there before) Yeah it is.

Waiter: La bonne nuit. Peut je prends votre ordre?

Joshua: Oui. J'aimerais la salade de poulet...Ahh, what would you like Rita?

Rita: Ahh.. (a littlie embarrassed since she knows no French) I would like the fish special please.

Joshua: Et la salade de poisson pour la dame s'il vous pla't.. 

Waiter: Aucun problème.

Joshua: (After the waiter walked away) So you've been here before?

Rita: Yeah.

Joshua: (smiling) And here I thought that I was impressing you.

Rita (smiling back) I'm impressed believe me! I'm impressed.

Joshua: Good.

Rita: So tell me Mr. Santana, how long are you back for this time?

Joshua: Well Detective Ortiz! I decided to come back for good.

Rita: Yeah right...Where have I heard that before?

Joshua: Seriously. I really think it is about time I settled down, I'm not going to be this age for ever, plus all of this traveling is getting rather over rated.

Rita: Ahh come off of it Josh. 

Joshua: What, you don't believe me?

Rita: No, I don't. I know you like it when of all those different women are pushing themselves on you. And don't even try to deny it.

Joshua: Hey! I can't help it if women find me charming (anxious to get Rita's reaction)

Rita: Aww please get over yourself.

Joshua: (Laughing) I'm just kidding Rita! But on a serious note, all those different women were mostly attracted to me because of my money, but here I have my family, my friends who were there for me from the start and most importantly, I have you.

Rita: (looking at him surprised) Me?

Joshua: Yeah! The last time I came home I didn't get my chance because you were married to Don, which I really couldn't understand since he's always been such a prick. Everyone seemed to see that except for you.

Rita: He wasn't that way with me! well at least not at first.

Joshua: Well I heard that your marriage was on the rocks even before Don was killed, so what happened?

Rita: (A little annoyed) What do you mean you heard? Who have you been talking to about my marriage?

Joshua: Come on Rita! Don't change the subject.

Rita: (feeling a little uncomfortable) I guess... (hesitating)...I guess everything began to change when I started having trouble getting pregnant. When we decided to go to the doctor we discovered that Don was infertile. From that day he got over protective, and, pretty much hard to be around. It was as if he didn't think he was a proper man anymore because he couldn't give me kids. He accused me of sleeping around, he made me change jobs... he just started acting like..

Joshua: A prick?

Rita: (forces a smile) Yeah. But you know what was so funny? He accused me of sleeping around when in fact he was banging some tramp.

Joshua: Well he didn't deserve you anyway.

Rita: And you think that you do? 

Joshua: (A little surprised by the question) Yea...I think I do. After all I've been in love with you from since I was 16 years old.

Rita: (unaware on how to react to that statement...simply says nothing)

Joshua: How do you think it would've been for us if I had stayed?

Rita: But you didn't stay Josh.

Joshua: I know Rita! And I am sorry that I hurt you when I left.

Rita: Oh really?

Joshua: Yeah really! You know that I loved you, and leaving you was the hardest thing I ever had to do, but getting that job was really important to my family, and after I came back and saw that you were in love with Don, I really didn't have much reason to stay anymore, so I returned to my work.

Rita: I understood why you left but I couldn't spend all of my life waiting for you to come back now could I?

Joshua: I know that... (hesitating a little) but I'm back now! And I'm not going anywhere..not if you don't want me to.

Rita: It's not that simple Josh.

Joshua: Why not? Is there someone else?

Rita: No...not exactly.

Joshua: What does that mean?

Rita: It's just that I recently broke up with someone..and a new relationship is not exactly on the top of my mind.

Joshua: (a little disappointed) You're still in love with him?

Rita: Maybe... (thinking it over) Yes. Yes I am.

Joshua: So I'm too late again?

Rita: Now I didn't say that...I just need time that's all, (trying to smile) my heart isn't exactly 100% healed as yet...and maybe we should get to know one another again before we start back up a relationship. Ok?

Joshua: Okay..Sooo..does that mean that there's still hope.

Rita: (Laughing) We'll see.. But Josh.

Joshua: Yeah.

Rita: Just for the record, I'm really glad that you're back.. seeing you today was a nice surprise.

Joshua: I'm glad to be back. (smiling)

Just then Bailamos by Enrique Iglesias began to play in the background

Joshua: You want to dance?

Rita: Josh...how do you get Latin music in a French restaurant? 

Joshua: (smiling) What can I say? I got connections.

Rita: Okay....But do you think that you can keep up with me? I know were good in high school but trust me, I developed some skills while you were gone.

Joshua: Oh really? (laughing) Well show me what you got detective. 

Rita: Come on.

Rita then takes his hand and they headed to heat up the dance floor.
