Moving Forward

This fanfic is dedicated to the A&C posse, with special thanks to Ida for serving as editor.  The time is a few days after the events of Tranny Get Your Gun.  The story contains adult situations.  Reader discretion is advised.

Andy was helping a lot more with the household chores but still wasn’t helping with Michelle.  But he wasn’t exactly ignoring her either.  Andy seemed to be in transition concerning Michelle.  While he hadn’t offered to change or feed the baby, sometimes he’d hold Michelle as long as she wasn’t crying.  A couple of times Andy had gotten up at night after Connie was already up feeding Michelle.  Once she was awake and had changed the baby and heated a bottle, it really wasn’t any help for Andy to sit beside her while she fed Michelle.  Other than the lost sleep, she loved cuddling and feeding Michelle in the quiet apartment while everyone else slept.  She didn’t think of Andy as an intruder into that special time either.  But she had begun fantasizing about getting just one uninterrupted night’s sleep.  Connie had never felt she had to know what went on inside Andy’s head.  The best thing she could do was just be patient until he was ready to talk.   She sure didn’t want to fight anymore.  Besides they were really beginning to feel like a family.

Theo had slowly adjusted to the new living arrangements.  After their fighting had made him cry, Andy and Connie both knew they had to reassure him.  They had sat down with him and told him that they would both always be there for him and that they were committed to being one family.  Theo had managed to parlay their guilt into a couple of new games.  He probably could have played it a little longer but he turned on the tears when they were clearly kidding each other and were, in fact, laughing.  Poor kid, he just wasn’t good at manipulation.   Another change they had made was they no longer held back from displaying affection for one another in front of Theo.  Instead of embarrassing his son, as Andy had feared, he seemed to accept it as a normal part of their new life.  They weren’t one of those couples who were overly demonstrative anyway.  Looking back both of them thought they could have handled preparing the little boy for the move better.  On the other hand, they didn’t have months to prepare for life with a baby.  Anyway, the worst seemed to be behind them now.

Connie was thinking about all these things as she sat watching the kids.  Theo was in full big brother mode tonight.  He was on the couch beside her holding Michelle who was fighting going to sleep.  Theo was doing his part to keep her awake, knowing it was past his bedtime too.  A flash startled Connie out of her reverie.

Theo looked at his father, “Dad, you’ll make the baby cry.”  Giggling he added, “I see spots.”

Andy held the camera out to Connie.  “Can you make out the number?”

Connie leaned toward it a little, “Looks like there’s one more.”

“Look this way,” Andy snapped one more and the rewinding started.  “Theo, you should already be asleep.  Now go to bed.”

Connie spoke to Theo while picking up Michelle, “I’ll put her down then come tuck you in.”

Theo made a great show of staggering off to bed blinded by spots from the flash.  Then he had to both take on water and let it out.  Plus he wanted his dad to read him a story.  Another half-hour passed before Theo was settled and Andy and Connie could finally be alone.  They sank onto the couch.  As Andy put his arm around Connie he said, “This is one of the best times of the day.”

“Yeah, it is.”  She leaned against him.  “What will we do when we have two asking for stories and dragging out bedtime?”

“I dunno.”  They sat silently for several minutes.  Finally Andy took a deep breath.  “Theo’s really good with Michelle, isn’t he?  He’s not afraid to feed her or anything.”

“Andy, I have my arms around them both the whole time.  I’m actually holding the bottle.  But, yes, he is good with her.  To tell you the truth, I think he is her favorite person.”

“He’s certainly more helpful than I am.”

Connie raised her head off Andy’s shoulder so she could see his face.

When she didn’t say anything, he continued.  “The truth is I don’t know how to take care of a baby.”

“Andy, you’ve had two kids,” Connie wasn’t buying it.

“When Andy, Jr., was born, I was working all the extra hours I could get, on any shift I could get.  Things were different then too. I thought the most important part of being a father was providing for my family.  I still think that’s important.  Plus Katie and her sister both had babies within a few months of each other.  They lived close and were together what seemed like all the time.  And then I had to fit in my drinking.”  He looked at her and gave that little grimace he did.  “Then when Theo came along, well you know what happened there at first.   But his mother had taken maternity leave and that turned into seventeen months.  You see, all mothers are obsessed with their babies.  That’s how the species survives.”  He looked into her eyes to be sure she remembered what he’d said a few mornings ago.  He saw the love in her eyes and a smile that let him know he’d better be wrapping this up before she started laughing.  “I took a marshal’s job on the side too.  I told you about that before.  I did try, I’d change his diaper and pick him up and the diaper would fall off.  I’d sing to him while he had his bath.  But I knew I wasn’t a real help.  Other than showing him how to piss standing up, his mother was the one caring for him.  When I had him on my own is when I really learned to take care of him.  He was three then.   There, you have it.”  He exhaled and rubbed his hand over his head.

Connie looked at Andy with a mix of love and amusement, “And just why didn’t you tell me any of this before?”

“I guess I didn’t want you to think I was incompetent.”

“It must be awful to be a man.  You can’t ever admit you don’t know how to do something”

“Don’t forget that we can’t ask for directions either,” Andy felt better now that his confession was over.  “I did spoon feed Theo some, when he was little.  Those apricots aren’t bad.  The rest of the baby food was nasty.  Anyways, maybe you could show me how to do a few things to help you out.”

Connie hesitated before answering.  “Do you just want to help me or do you want to take care of Michelle?”

Andy shrugged, “Both.”  He locked eyes with Connie.  “I want us to be one family.  I don’t want her thinking I’m just some guy who lives here.”

Connie wondered if Andy was feeling a little left out, but knew he’d never admit it and didn’t pursue it.  “Okay.”  Since she knew Andy so well, she added, “I won’t tell anyone you need baby lessons.”

“Thanks.  I’m a lucky man.”  He pulled her close and kissed her slowly and softly.  Then he reached for the remote.  “Want to see can we find some news.”

Connie had thought the kiss was leading somewhere and was caught off-guard.

“Andy Sipowicz, you better not turn on that TV, not after that kiss.”

“Oh, okay, what do you want to do then?”  He slid his hand along her face and into her hair.  He’d already closed his eyes when he felt her lips on his.

“Why don’t I go put on something sexy,” she whispered.   It was a joke they shared.   Since they had never lived together without kids, something sexy meant a shirt without any baby by-products on it.

Andy nodded, smiling and raising his eyebrows at her.  “I’ll be along.”  He heard Connie in the bathroom brushing her teeth then she closed the door.   He turned on the TV, muted the sound and flicked to a sports channel to see some of the scores.  He heard flushing and hit the off button.  Connie stepped to the doorway from the hall, “Coming?”  Andy pressed his lips together in a half-smile and stood up.  He checked the locks and turned off lights on his way to the bathroom.   He walked into the bedroom expecting to find Connie in bed, but she was standing at the dresser brushing her hair.  She was wearing a blue t-shirt with nothing on underneath.  Each time she raised her arm the shirt raised up too.  He undressed while watching her.  He knew she was watching him watch her in the mirror.  As he got into the bed, she turned out the last light leaving only the light filtering in from the streetlights.

She placed one knee on the bed then leaned her upper body over his.  He felt her trace his ear with her fingertips then felt her breath on his ear as she whispered into it.  “I’m glad you found the bedroom,” he felt a small shiver go through his body as she kissed his ear, “since you can’t ask for directions.”  She rolled off lying on her side facing him.

“Smart ass.”  He turned on his side to face her.  Pulling her into his arms he buried his face in her neck.  He felt her fingers in the fringe of hair on his neck.  “You smell so good.”

“It’s my conditioner.”  She moved her body against his.  “Andy.”

            “Hmm.”

“Did you see the weather,” she asked ever so innocently.

Andy knew he was busted, “No, just a few scores,” he mumbled into her neck.

            “Andy.”

            “What now?”

“Tell me a story.”

“What,” he moved back to see her face.

“I want you to tell me a bedtime story,” she teased.

“Okay, I’ll tell you a story.”  He put just enough gentle pressure on her shoulder to get her to turn onto her back.  “I’ll tell you a story about two cops, an old cop and a beautiful young cop.”

She stiffened.  “No, I don’t want you even thinking like that.  I don’t.”   He was sort of teasing, but she wasn’t.  He didn’t want a discussion, not now.

“There was a guy cop and a girl cop.”  She smiled and he proceeded.  They shared a long kiss.  “The guy cop and the girl cop became friends.”  He propped on his left arm and stroked her body with his right hand.  She felt his hand on her bare leg and bent her knee as he trailed his fingers along the back of her thigh.  “Then one night the girl cop kissed the guy cop and it shook him up real bad.”  He tugged up on the t-shirt.  She lifted her hips so he could push it up.  Her muscles quivered as little kisses and his mustache tickled her lower abdomen.  “You see, it wasn’t a kiss like this,” he kissed her cheek.  “It was more like this,” he kissed her lips. His hands were pushing the front of the shirt up they kissed again.   “Let’s get this off,” he slipped a hand under her back easing her up and out of the shirt.

She fell back onto the bed pulling him on top of her.  “Andy,” she moaned into his neck while working her leg under one of his.   He was kissing her neck.

“The guy cop didn’t think the girl cop could possibly love him, but she did.  The girl cop was very patient.  She didn’t put any pressure on him.”  He felt pressure from her leg between his. “Sometimes he’d imagine doing this.”  He caressed her breasts and kissed each one.

“Andy,” Connie tried to pull him closer.  Her hands were all over him.  She didn’t know how much more of this story she could take.  She felt his hands underneath her hips.

“The guy had always been a tit man, but she had such a fine ass.”  He trailed off as she pulled him into her.

Later she lay cradled in his arms feeling contented and so fortunate to have Andy in her life.  As much as she craved sleep, she didn’t want to go to sleep just yet.  Andy lifted her chin with his hand and tenderly kissed her.  She took his hand and interlaced her fingers with his, then asked “How did the story end?”

“The story, well, the guy cop realized he loved the girl cop very much.”  He saw she seemed to be expecting more.  “They moved in together with their two kids and lived happily ever after.”  He brushed her hair back with his fingers. She was so young that she still believed in happily ever afters.  Maybe he was beginning to believe in them himself. “You need to get some sleep.  Close your eyes.”

The last thing she heard as she surrendered to sleep was a very soft, “I love you.”

The End
