Bewitching Greg
Everyone
is in the office on this fine autumn day. It's sunny outside, the windows
are open; the ceiling fan is spinning. Andy and Junior are leaving to
investigate a murder in Battery Park. They grab the radios and leave.
Lt. Rodriguez enters the squad with a dark haired woman on his heals.
"Medavoy, Jones, come with me". The dark haired woman is
following as quickly behind Tony as she can, when Tony turns sharply and faces
the woman. "Mrs. Kravitz, have a seat", motioning to the bench
in front of John Irvin's desk. Mrs. Kravitz sits. Greg and Baldwin
close the door after Tony enters the coffee room. Tony tells them to sit and
they look quickly at one another and then sit. Tony sits on the edge of
the table that holds the coffeemaker and donuts. "This Kravitz woman
is harassing the police. She's apparently a peeping tom and a nosy
neighbor to a family named Stephens. They all live in an affluent
neighborhood. Her husband, Mr. Kravitz seems like a nice man, but this
woman should see a therapist. She's crazy. Thing is, they don't have
enough manpower to cover this case anymore and they need our help. I am
assigning the two of you into looking into the Kravitz and Stephens situation
and report back anything you can tell me".
It's Greg's turn to speak. "Okay Boss, so what is the Kravitz woman
saying"?
"She says the Stephens, especially Samantha, possess power".
"That's ridiculous" Baldwin says. Taking the file from Tony,
Baldwin and Greg look at the file and Greg exits the room to get Mrs. Kravitz.
Tony hussles from the room into his office and shuts the door. PAA John
has gotten Mrs. Kravitz a cup of ice-water and she is sitting there on the
bench. Greg escorts her into the coffee room. He offers her coffee,
juice and donuts. She declines.
Greg and Baldwin sit and listen to what Mrs. Kravitz has to say.
"This Mrs. Stephens and her husband Darrin live across the street from me
in Westport. They have this old aunt who collects doorknobs in her
suitcase. The suitcase looks like the same bag Mary Poppins used to carry.
There are a lot of very strange people coming and going at all hours".
"Define strange people", Greg prompts Mrs. Kravitz.
"They dress funny. They say it's a costume party and he works for
McMann and Tate but no one entertains at four in the morning. One night,
Mr Stephens and Mrs. Stephens had a fight and I overheard Mr Stephens calling
Mrs. Stephens "Queen of the Witches" before he slammed the door and
drove off in a huff."
Greg says,"Where were you when you heard calling her Queen of the
Witches"?
Mrs. Kravitz looks uncomfortable and Baldwin says "Mrs. Kravitz, answer the
question"!
Mrs. Kravitz says "I was going to borrow a cup of sugar and I heard them
arguing and I was on the porch looking in the window".
"What time of day was this Mrs. Kravitz"? Greg asks.
"About midnight" Mrs. Kravitz stammers.
Greg gets his jacket, looks at Baldwin and says "Let's take a drive out to
Westport". The three of them exit the room.

Morningglory Circle is as lovely as ever. The lawns are green, the trees
are old and full of leaves changing colors. Orange, yellow and red maple leaves
bursting in color make for a beautiful drive. Baldwin Jones parks the car
in the Kravitz driveway. Greg jumps out of the car and escorts Mrs.
Kravitz out of the car. A tall man, not nearly as tall as Baldwin Jones,
but tall, older than Greg, balding comes out of the garage in a flannel shirt,
light jacket, slacks and white socks and penny loafers. "Gladys, what
have you done now"? Mr Kravitz says harshly.
Mrs. Kravitz begins to mumble jibberish and Greg takes over. "Are you Mr.
Kravitz?" Greg says taking a pen from his shirt pocket. Mr.
Kravitz nods and says, "Yes, my name is Abner and this is Gladys.
What kind of trouble is she in now"?
Just then, a convertible pulls into the driveway across the street. A
pretty blonde steps out of the car, picking up a bag of groceries and a handbag
and proceeds up the walk to the front door. Once inside, Mrs. Kravitz
pokes Baldwin in the stomach and says "That's her! Mrs.
Stephens".
Baldwin looks slightly irritated at being poked in the stomach. Greg steps
forward and says, "Nothing unusual. She drove a car in not a
broomstick". Greg smiles but tries to hide it.
"Oh but, I'm sure she could!" Mrs. Kravitz exclaims.
"Do what"? Baldwin asks.
"Fly on a broomstick"! Mrs Kravitz says harshly.
Mr. Kravitz then takes Mrs. Kravitz by the arm and starts to lead her to the
front door of their home. "Come on now Gladys. It's time for
your anti-anxiety tablet".
Once Mrs. Kravitz is inside the house, Baldwin and Greg move their car out into
the street and park up the street a bit. "I want to look
around", Greg says. Baldwin shakes his head and says "She a nut
case Greg. We drive back to the city, tell the Leu that and proceed on
with a real case". Greg shakes his head. Baldwin sighs.
"Let's get some lunch" Baldwin says, and they drive off to a
coffeeshop nearby.

Greg is sitting in the Westport police station when the call from Mrs. Kravitz
comes through at about eleven in the evening. Baldwin has left for vacation with
Valerie to visit her parents. Greg sits with the officer at the
switchboard and the officer say "Right, we'll have someone out right
away".
Greg takes the paper from the officer. Mrs. Kravitz says that Darrin and
Samantha are at a party and a wild woman is babysitting, using disco lights and
an acoustic guitar. Greg shakes his head.
Greg drives to Morningglory Circle and walks up the walk to the Stephens house.
He rings the doorbell. The music stops but the disco ball is rotating.
A brunette with a short skirt, go-go boots, and a halter top answers the door.
"Greggie", Serena says and gives him a kiss on the mouth. She
pulls Greg into the living room. There is a lion sitting on the sofa and Serena
has laid her acoustic guitar in a chair. Greg takes a closer look at the
lion and realizes that the lion is a drummer for a band Greg used to listen to
about 20 years ago. Greg and Serena sit on the loveseat. "The Kravitz
woman says there are strange things going on here". Serena laughs.
Greg laughs and puts his hand in the air and a coke materializes into his hand.
Serena pops a martini into hers. "Not drinking, Darling"?
Greg shakes his head, "No, I'm on duty".
Just then car doors slam shut and Darrin and Samantha's voice are heard on the
walkway. The lion disappears into thin air and so does Greg. Darrin
and Samantha come in and take off their coats. Samantha is very elegantly
dressed and Darrin is in a tux. They greet Serena, Darrin orders her to
get rid of the disco light, and Serena frowns but the disco lighting instantly
vanish. Darrin and Samantha ask how Tabitha is and go on upstairs to bed.
Darrin looks at Serena for a long moment and says "I hope you won't be here
in the morning", and Serena says "Good night Dum Dum". In a
few minutes, all is quiet and Greg pops back into the room sitting next to
Serena on the loveseat. Serena giggles and kisses Greg.
Samantha is laying in bed wide awake after drinking too much coffee.
Darrin is lying next to her sound asleep. Samantha can hear Serena talking
and decides to pop into the kitchen. Serena and Greg are sitting at the
table eating banana splits. "Well, well, Greggie after all these
years" Samantha exclaims. Greg stands and gives Samantha a quick kiss
on the cheek. "Your neighbor, Gladys Kravitz is making too many calls
to the Westport Police". Samantha sighs and shakes her head.
There is a large noise from the hallway and Samantha, Serena and Greg run into
the hallway. Aunt Clara, elegantly dressed is coming out of the closet.
Eddie Gibson is on her heels. "I escorted Aunt Clara to the
interplanetary fashion show. The models look anorexic as usual".
Eddie looks at Greg and gives him a pat on the back. "Greg, that
Kravitz woman is a pain in the ass".
Samantha is making scrambled eggs and homemade waffles in a waffle iron.
Eddie Gibson, Greg, Tabitha, Aunt Clara, Serena and Darrin are all sitting
around the table. Greg and Eddie have been explaining to Darrin who they
are and why they are there. Darrin, the mortal is surprisely subdued.
Perhaps he is hungover, Eddie thinks. Perhaps he is sick and tired of all
this, Greg thinks and looks longingly at Samantha's beautiful figure.
"Does this Mrs. Kravitz have any children"? Greg asks. He has a
yellow pad of paper and his cross pen out on the kitchen table.
Samantha pours coffee for everyone. Darrin is dishing up the eggs.
Aunt Clara passes the waffles. Uncle Eddie is warming the syrup on the
stove. "No she and Mr. Kravitz have never had children", Darrin
replies. Eddie takes a long sip of coffee and says "Abner and I play
golf sometimes. He says Gladys was a seamstress when they married.
She continued to work thinking they would have children and the doctor told her
to stop working and maybe she would be pregnant within a few months but it never
happened". Uncle Eddie takes a deep breathe. "This is my
opinion because I've been in the clubhouse at the course but I don't think they
have anything in common. I don't think she even drives".
"I could teach her to drive"! Samantha says with a big smile.
"No, sweetheart, that wouldn't be a good idea"! Darrin exclaims.
"Oh now Darrin, it will get her out of the house and we'll do it right here
in the neighborhood. Beside, the bridal shop that Louise Tate was in
recently was very short-handed. They could use a seamstress".
"That's a great idea, Sammy"!, Greg exclaims. "Get her away
from the hum-drum of her grouchy husband and she'll not be up all hours watching
the activates around here". Greg gently pushes Serena away from
nuzzling on his neck.
Greg drives back into the city and Uncle Eddie and Samantha go to see Mrs.
Kravitz. Within a few weeks, Mrs. Kravitz has talked her husband into
buying her a Mustang convertible in bright red and she is driving to work at the
local bridal shop. Abner is delighted with the whole arrangement because
he can sleep through the night and golf with Eddie and Greg as often as he feels
like.
The end.
