It's All Relative

Chapter 1

It had been a rainy summer and Greg welcomes the fall temperatures.  It was early October and the leaves in New England were  beautiful colors.  Greg and Baldwin had driven to Boston to watch a game at Fenway Park. Boston Red Sox beat Cincinnati Reds in a very close game. Greg had driven to see Jamie who was at a party at Cape Cod.  Jamie had recovered nicely from her emergency appendectomy and was looking radiant at the clam bake.  Greg had also driven to see his new grandbaby, the second child of Katie's and her hubby Kevin.  This one had Greg's red hair and  they named him Thomas Gregory.  Greg is so proud.  Abby and Greg and Abby's current lover Gwen got together a couple of times a year.  Greg's biological son, Michael, was enrolled in private school and was doing very well.  He was playing the piano exceptionally well and  Greg was so happy for Abby and Michael. Greg had purchased a Baldwin piano for Michael when he was three and Greg paid for lessons and the child was a musical virtuoso.

Greg had heard from his daughters that Marie had a new boyfriend & he was quite young.  Marie was in her mid-fifties and her boyfriend, Ian was 27.  He owned his own tanning salon, was tall, will built and wore an earring in one ear.  He was very tanned and his hair was bleached blonde.  Marie had gone to his salon for a massage and met Ian.  Ian Bumpus.  Marie and Ian talked at great length and that night after the salon closed, they went out to eat at a vegetarian restaurant.  Later, in Marie's bed their night was filled with burning passion.  They continued to see each other and a few months later, they flew to Vegas for a long weekend of fun.  Marie had given Ian Bumpus the idea that she was rich.  Maybe it was because she had an air of class about her and she had worked for so long at Bloomingdales.  Maybe it was because her daughters went to good schools.  Ian's salon was struggling in the weak economy and an older chic with money was ideal to him.  He proposed marriage in the middle of the night in the middle of a bubbling hot tub, with champagne and strawberries nearby.  Marie couldn't contain her elation.  He was the best lover she had ever had!

They married over the long weekend and after they married, Ian became cool and distant.  He was using Marie's credit card and lavished great gifts to the person he loved the most: himself.  Marie became quite depressed in the months that followed and had thoughts of suicide.  Marie continued to go to work at Bloomingdales, but her energy level was not good.  She consulted a doctor who had treated Marie for the common cold and allergies over the years and was shocked by her appearance.  There were bruises on her buttocks, side and even on her breasts.  Apparently, Ian Bumpus was abusive.  The doctor called for intervention and Marie scurried off before the domestic violence consultant could arrive at the physicians office.  Marie wrecked her car on the way home from the doctor and when Ian found out, he beat her again.

A couple of weeks later, a bad storm had cleared out the department store and many of the employees were sent home early.  Marie went straight home.  The apartment smelled strongly of spilled beer and had the odoriferous smell of pot.  The drapes were drawn and Marie tiptoed through the apartment to the bathroom.  When Marie arrived in the bathroom, she found Ian and a young lady, so thin that all the bones in her back showed, making love at the sink.  Marie just stood there with her mouth hanging open.  Ian started to come at but Marie fearing another beating locked herself in the bedroom.  What happened next, happened so fast that Marie left the apartment a moment after the gunshots were fired and before the police could arrive.

Greg is sitting at his desk ready to call it a day.  He wants to run by Barnes and Nobles for a Stephen King book singing.  Baldwin is leaving to play basketball with Junior.  Andy and Connie have already left, leaving early to see Theo in a school production of "The Prince and The Pauper."  PAA John Irvin was going to see the school production.  He had volunteered to make many of the costumes for the play.  Rita was off to take a night class at NYU.

"What's the class in Rita?" Greg asks.  Rita is digging through her book bag.  She smiles sweetly at Greg and brings out the books.  Greg is thumbing through a book Microsoft Excel, then Women Studies, and finally a class in photography.  Greg is noticeably impressed.  Rita says good-bye to Greg and sets off for class.  Greg is happy for her.  She really came through for Lt. Rodgriguez the night of  the wedding.  She was a great shot and Fraker was dead.  Lt. Rodriguez health was uncertain for a while but now he is back at work and the detectives asked Rita where she would like to eat and she chose the Hard Rock Cafe.  It was noisy but fun.  One waiter flirted with Rita and she flirted back and Junior felt a rage burning deep inside him.  He was the first to leave the party, eating lightly.  Connie, Baldwin and Greg noticed that Rita didn't even notice Jr's early departure.  She was talking about a trip to see a friend in Maine and what a good time they had even in the chilly fall air.

The phone rings and the department is looking for Greg.  There has been a shooting and a man with priors and his girlfriend are dead.  A Marie Medavoy lived in the apartment and was seen before the murders but not since then.  Greg goes looking for Baldwin.  Baldwin sees Greg looking sick standing in the doorway of the locker room.  He knows it's bad news and Junior is dressing for basketball practice too, doesn't even change back to civilian clothes.  He rides along as Baldwin drives.

They arrive at the apartment dwelling which is in a modest neighborhood.  Shabby chic and there isn't a doorman.  Just a buzzer to unlock the downstairs door.  A lady from the Czech Republic is the landlord and she tells the three detectives about hearing arguing and then two gunshots.  She says she wasn't the one who saw Marie.  Greg asks who it was that saw Marie and there is a cleaning lady, who is from the Dominican Republic who is sweeping the carpeting in the elevator.  Crime scene has taken the stairs and taped off the sixth floor apartment.  There is blood only in the bathroom.  The bedroom door is jammed and when Baldwin and Junior break the door in, they find Marie Medavoy's purse and heels on the bed and the bedroom window open.  The bedroom window feeds out onto a fire escape that empties into a dark alley between two family run diners.  Greg goes out the window and down the fire escape with Baldwin on his heels.  Junior goes to look at the victims.  Greg and Baldwin meet a uniformed cop and says that there aren't any size 6 shoe prints that run through some muddy areas in the alley.  They've checked the dumpsters and there are no weapons to be found.

Chapter 2

Greg works all night and the next day until Lt. Rodriguez tells him to go home and go to bed.  Greg starts to argue but Lt. Rodriguez has Officer Miller drive Greg home.  There is little Greg can do.  Greg goes home to call his daughters and deliver the news.  It's a tearful exchange.  No one knows where Marie is and even though it was not an amicable divorce, Greg finds it depressing.  He's trying to keep his head straight.  Phone records  show no unusual inbound or outbound calls from  Marie's apartment.  They check the phone records for the girl and there isn't anything unusual there either. He has checked her old haunts today.  He had been to Bloomingdales and inquired to the human resources department who turned him over to the ladies on 2.  Greg rode the escalators and found fellow sales clerks working in the book department.  There was one sales clerk that had remembered that creditors had called.  Marie was devastated.  She was notoriously frugal and now she was overdrawn and greatly in debt. Something was fishy and Greg then made inquiries at the bank and with the local credit bureau.  His findings made him sick.

Junior has been doing fine job of detective work.  By the time Greg comes into the office the next morning, Junior has found that Ian Bumpus is wanted in California on drug charges.  He is also wanted in Florida for check fraud.  He has had a history of making his lovers miserable.  He has been locked up twice in Troy, NY for domestic violence.  Greg receives a call back from the human resources department and says that there were rumors within the store that Marie was being beaten by Ian Bumpus and had intervention at the store more than one.  Every time intervention showed up, Marie turned up missing within the store.  Once the clerks found her in the smoker's hub after intervention had left.  Greg calls Diane Russell in Brooklyn and tells her what he knows.  Diane reports back later in the day that someone meeting Marie's description had shown up in a crisis center in Queens bleeding badly from rape. This had been reported about a week before the shootings.  They believe that it happened with Ian.  When Greg heard that, he let Baldwin take the rest of the call.  Greg could barely get to the bathroom fast enough.  Andy was in there gargling Scope when Greg went into a stall and retched.  It happened again and again.  Andy stayed there and was holding Greg and getting him to finally sit down on the bench getting him a cold wet compress for his head, spraying Lysol in the toilet area, and shouting to John Irvin to gets some bottled water in there.  Lt. Rodriguez was ready to call the staff physician but Greg wouldn't allow it.  Andy took him outside in the air and they drove down to Battery Park and walked for a while.  Greg began to tire and Andy had Greg sit on a secluded bench looking out towards Ellis and Liberty Island.  Andy bought a couple of Diet Cokes from a vendor and brought them to Greg.  Andy couldn't get Greg to talk.  Greg sat there and cried for the longest time, with Andy pulling a handkerchief from his jacket and handing it to Greg.  He tried holding Greg because he didn't know what to say.

Chapter 3

Baldwin and Junior get a tip from a Midwestern mental hospital that matches the description of Deidre.  Apparently she somehow managed to get away from the hospital during a power outage.  There had been a bad storm with large hail and dangerous lightning and then later tornado warnings so nurses and aides were busy moving patients into windowless corridors where they would be safe from flying glass and other debris.  From what state police along the Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio Turnpikes believe is that she rode with a series of drivers drove her as far as their deliveries were and she was left to fend for herself between here and there.  By the time she was in Pennsylvania, she had hooked up with a friend of Ian Bumpus who was on his way to NYC.  It was through this friend who was visiting a friend at Riker's, that Ian met Deirdre the afternoon of the murders.  Not much else was known except she wasn't on her medication, she had TB from years of anorexia,  and that she was now dead with no known relatives.

"No family then"? Baldwin asks thumbing through the chart.  Junior shakes his head and takes a long sip of coffee.  Junior is reading the file from the mental hospital and it shows that Deirdre had a series of alias names.  She said her father was the Unibomber.  Then she said her uncle was Berkowiz "Son of Sam" Murderer.

Greg is still looking for Marie.  Jamie and Katie are staying in their homes in case Marie should show up there.  Marie's mother and father are both dead but she has a sister that lives in  Michigan.  Angela Norman and her husband are militants and don't like government and wrote letters to get Timothy McVey freed from jail. One year, Mr. Norman who goes by Dicky urinated on his tax form and mailed it in.  Greg knows that Marie and Angela aren't close but still maybe Marie is there. Desperate people do desperate things.  Greg calls there and the sister, who is not a fan of Greg is barely civil to Greg.  She is vague and Greg calls the Livonia police who in turn call the Detroit police for backup.  They canvas the area and call back and tell Greg that they believe Marie might be with her sister.  Greg and Baldwin are flown by chopper to LaGuardia and the flight is only forty minutes. It's cold and rainy autumn afternoon in Livonia.  The homes are decorated for Halloween and being late in the afternoon a long yellow school bus lets children out at the street corner.  Police in plain clothes see that the children are safely in their homes.  The Ford Grand Marquis disappears down a dark street as the storm continues to worsen.  Vans pull up in front of the house of Marie's sister Angela Norman, and they file out.  Greg and Baldwin are in bulletproof wear and have uniformed police behind them.  The neighborhood is extremely quiet with neighbors peering from inside their nice homes.  The only sound is that off a barking dog in the distance.  There is then a loud clack of thunder which makes Medavoy and Jones jump.  Medavoy says something about taking a leak.  Baldwin says sharply "Not now Greg!" in a hushed whisper.  Channel 50 Metro Detroit TV News is parking on the street corner.  The satellite dish is up.  Greg is waiting for the police from the next street over to cross through back yard and into the back yard of Angela Norman's house.  All the curtains are closed.  Greg hears an engine running and realizes that Toledo 11 News is  now on the street corner now too.

Greg knocks on the door and Dicky's voice comes through the close door, "Go away!"  Baldwin fists the door with his big hand and says "Police Mr. Norman!  Hand over Marie."  Greg mutters something about Angela hating him.  Baldwin gives Greg a long look and Baldwin starts to break the door.  Their are cops everywhere with guns ready to fire.  Their is a strong smell of smoke coming from inside the house when a window blows out in the back of the house and flames shoot from the windows.  Livonia Fire are radioed and as one cop turns on the garden house to put the fire out, gunfire from the house.  The fire is raging and the Livonia FD are there now and more fire breaks windows in an upstairs bedroom.

"Greg!", it's Marie's voice.  It takes both Baldwin and Greg to find her calling from a basement window.  The window is narrow and the house is very much on fire.  Greg stands by helplessly as the cops and fire fighters work together to get Marie who is unbathed and in dirty clothes out of the basement window.  They get Marie out who collapses in Greg's arms and is put on a stretcher.  Everyone clears away from the house and just then the roof collapses.  Marie is transported to University of Michigan's hospital.

Chapter 4

The next morning, the detectives are back at the house with forensics and the fire department.  It is discovered that their are no remains meaning that Greg's in law's flew the coop sometime before the roof collapsed.  But the question is, how did they escape?  Greg and Baldwin go to the hospital and question Marie thoroughly regarding the Bumpus murder.    She confesses to killing Ian in self defense and Deirdre was killed because the bullet went through Ian's body and traveled to Deirdre's body.

Greg and Baldwin return to the 15th.  Later in the day, they receive mail, the fire department has found a tunnel between two houses, one of which Marie was locked in the basement.  Greg calls John Walsh and who airs the story of Angela and Dicky on that week's program.  The switchboard lights up.  They've been seen in Toledo, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Philly.  It is believed that they may be in the New York City area.  Greg, Baldwin, Junior and Andy pour over people who are anti-government and they check out the suspects but turn up nothing.

Greg goes to bed that night depressed.  The girls are upset that their mother is being held in the women's prison until the hearing.  Greg takes a couple of Advil and tries to go to sleep.  There is a distant rumble of thunder.  Greg finds his favorite flannel pajamas, put some soft music on, and lays down and goes to sleep.  Greg snaps out of a deep sleep.  What the hell was that?  All Greg can feel is his heart pounding in his chest.  Greg removes the revolver from under the bed.  There is no one in the apartment.

The next morning Greg is at the office when the downstairs notifies the detectives that there is a situation outside.  Greg looks outside and sees an old Ford Econoline with Michigan plates.  Greg identifies the driver as Angela.  A grenade is thrown from the van and the van drives away.  No one moves.  It doesn't go off.  Tony Rogriguez comes out of his office and says that more of the preceint houses have had  even been fired on, or a dummy grenade has been thrown to create a panic.  Every time, the gerenade is thrown, a robbery at a neighborhood bank goes down with a robber looking much like Dicky Norman in the bank camera. Greg, Baldwin, and Junior run for their car and Greg drives to Dicky Norman's brother's home in Brooklyn.  Dicky's brother, Brian, lives his life in a wheelchair after being shot in Viet Nam.  Greg is pretty sure he can get Brian to talk.  Brian lives alone and  rarely leaves his apartment.  As they get close to the apartment building, they come under fire.  Junior is driving and they duck down an alley.  Greg is in the back seat and is covering their backs.  Baldwin calls for backup and backup is just what they get.  Gun fire is coming from the old van.  The door of the van slides open and Greg sees Dicky run into the apartment building.  Angela drives off but not before throwing a grenade out the window that blows up two cars.  Junior and Baldwin want to pursue Angela and Greg tells them they are crazy.  They pursue her and drive all over Brooklyn.  The old van is beginning to put out black exhaust.  Angela bolts from the van and takes off on foot.  Baldwin jumps out of the car and takes out after her with Junior and Greg circling after them.  Angela turns and fires at the car.  It shatters the window where Baldwin was sitting but no one is hurt.  Baldwin is not far behind her and is ready to grab her when she turns and fires on him.  Baldwin has hidden behind a concrete pillar and he moves ever so slightly and she fires again.  Greg eases the car door open and fires at Angela.  She fires at him and it hits Greg right in the right leg.  Greg is so furious, he fires back and her and it hits her.  Junior jumps from behind the wheel to look at Angela who is DOA and Baldwin is calling for help for Greg.  Greg is in pain but the paramedics assure him that he will be fine.  They are enroute to the hospital when they get word that Dicky is under arrest.  He has fired at officers from the apartment but they have been able to access the building by using the fire escapes.  Brian, Dicky's brother is taken to Bellevue for observation.  He is complaining of chest pains but he is later released.

Greg is in emergency.  They are getting ready to take him upstairs to surgery.  Dr. Devlin says that someone from admitting will be in to make sure that all the information Greg has given them as to next of kin, address and so forth, is correct.  Greg has been given something for the throbbing pain.

"Gregory."  It's Donna.  Beautiful as ever.  Greg thinks he must be hallucinating.  No, they are getting ready to transport him upstairs and he has just handed back the clipboard and pen to Donna.  "I'll come up later tonight," she says, and in her pink and white hospital uniform, she scurries away from the elevators.

The End.
