Prayer Campaign Launched to Save St Hedwig's

Responding to the recommendation by the diocese of Buffalo's Strategic Planning Commission to close St Hedwig's Church, concerned parishioners have launched a prayer campaign in an effort to save the church.

Through daily prayers to the late Rev.John L Hrycyna, it is hoped the former pastor and principal builder of the church will intercede to keep St Hedwig's open.

It was a very touching moment Tuesday afternoon when seven parishioners gathered around Father Hrycyna's final resting place to ask for his intercession. They placed a five-day candle at his gravesite. A special prayer to Father Hrycyna composed and recited by Mary Ann Herrington, a former parishioner and graduate of St Hedwig's School, called for divine intervention to reverse the proposal sent to Bishop Edward U Klimec to close the parish.

Members of the prayer campaign encourage all St Hedwig's parishioners and friends of the parish to visit father Hrycyna's gravesite at St Hedwig's cemetery, Route 60, Dunkirk. (As you enter and proceed right, it is the first monument on the left with the glowing candle) Please ask for his help in saving the church that was his special legacy to his parishioners.

From The Observer November 2007

Father Hrycyna,

We know you are looking down on us and can feel our pain, heartbreak and spiritual  anguish at the thought of losing our  beloved St Hedwig's Church, your legacy to us. As our shepherd you guided the faithful of St Hedwig's for 16 years and taught us by example to be true and loving children of God, Please help us now in our hour of need by asking God to let  St Hedwig's Church and parish continue to live so that the community of people who built this church along with you, will be able to know the spiritual comfort of your legacy to the end of their days. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
