- TRINITARIAN MEDITATION -

NYMPH  D. KELLERMAN

Trinitarian Meditation is a special and simple form of Contemplative Prayer.    A technique in which the “breath of life” (Hebrew - "Neshamah") is applied to obtain and maintain optimum health on a three-dimensional level – physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Trinitarian Meditation is based on the following Trichotomy:

1.     Man, as created in the Image and after the Likeness of God

2.     Man, as recipient of the neshamah  (breath-of-life), and

3.     Man, as the only recipient of free will.

-         IN THE  "NESHAMAH"  LIES THE POWER OF MEDITATION -

-

Intra in cubiculum mentis tuae – enter into the chamber of your mind (St. Augustine).

The practice of Trinitarian Meditation makes man oblivious to his own desires and within a short period of time, he reaches a “not my will, but Thy will”-point where the “Thy will” becomes his only desire.   Through this new openness to God, the Holy Spirit communicates more freely with man’s authentic self, and man becomes aware of the God-ordained purpose of his life.

Furthermore, Trinitarian Meditation attempts to explain the existing correlation between Theology and Physics.   Prof. Frank J. Tipler, (Professor of Mathematical Physics at Tulane University, and author of "The Physics of Immortality") says: “from the Physics point of view, Theology is nothing but physical Cosmology based on the assumption that life as a whole is immortal” (page 17) and “The time has come to absorb Theology into Physics, to make Heaven as real as an electron” (Preface XV).

Fusing Physics and Theology in our technologically advanced age, does not seem a difficult task anymore.   Theology’s Genesis 1:3 and Physic’s explanation of the Big Bang is but one of many examples.   God said  “let there be light” and the Big Bang happened – a forcible discharge of energy, an explosion which cannot verbally be described – followed by the three phases of Creation which covers more than 15 billion years with it’s generations of stars and the conversion of hydrogen into helium with the eventual transformation of these simple elements into heavier elements for the sustenance of life.   The Big Bang set the universe onto a journey that was targeted towards life, and for billions of years the universe did nothing else by prepare itself to serve man, the crown of all creation when God said  “let us make man” - Genesis 1:26 - and created man in His own Image and after His own Likeness, and breathed into his nostril the breath of life - Genesis 2:7 - AND GAVE MAN FREE WILL.

From this point in Biblical history, the line of breath runs through the Old Testament and culminates in John 20:22 when Jesus breathed upon the disciples (mankind), saying: “……receive ye the Holy Spirit…..”, and man, as the crown of Creation, became the only creature capable of executing  the commission in  John 14:12 – “….the works that I do shall he do also;  and greater works than these shall he do”.

THEOLOGICAL  BACKGROUND  OF  TRINITARIAN

MEDITATION:

Emphasis falls on:

a)     BREATH – as soul, as spirit, as mind

          b)  PRAYER – as relaxation, as stillness, as meditation

King James Version Reference Bible - Condensed Cyclopedia of Topics and texts page 115 no. 2936 - the following note:

"Stillness is essential to reception of instruction".

Trinitarian Meditation is based on the following 4 texts from Scripture:

GENESIS 2:7:

"And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."

The creation of man must not be seen in a mechanical sense.    According to 19th century Biblical exegete, Delitzsch, man was pervaded by the Divine Breath of Life at the SAME moment in which the dust, by virtue of creative Omnipotence, shaped itself into a human form.

Man, as the crown of all creation, thus received his life from a very definite act of Divine inbreathing, an inflatus of RUACH ELOHIM (Breath of God/Spirit of God).

GENESIS 24:63:

“Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and behold, the camels were coming.”

went - a movement - he moved his physical body,

out - a point in space -  he moved to a place where he would be free from distractions that might influence his meditation.

to meditate - a deed - an "opening up to God", where he can listen to God, and where he can rest and exist in God.

in the field - a point in space - "field" can symbolize a "quiet place".   The Holy Spirit takes the spiritual man to a quiet place for his meditation.

eventide - a time - the poetic word for evening which refers to late afternoon.   Isaac thus went to meditate during a quiet time.    A time when the light of day was already dimmed, which has a relaxing effect on the physical body.

During the first half of the verse it is noted that Isaac moved to a quiet place during a quiet time of day to listen to God and to be in God.

lifted up his eyes - a movement which according to science, immediately slows down the brain's electrical activity, and with a slower brainwave activity, the physical body relaxes.

and saw - when the physical body is in a more relaxed state, sight improves - physical as well as spiritual

the camels were coming - "camels" can symbolise "riches" - material as well as spiritual.   Isaac awaited his bride Rebecca. In the Christian life, a marriage contributes to spiritual richness.  Isaac's riches were coming.

PSALM 46:10:

"Be still and know that I am God.

Can be seen as a literal instruction for man to be quiet - for his physical body to be passive with regards to muscles and vocal chords, which can and should result in becoming deeply relaxed.

To become still is essential when man has to receive instructions from God.    (Nu 9:8: ‘And Moses said unto them, Stand still, and I will hear what the Lord will command concerning you';  1 S9:27: ‘…….. but stand thou still a while, that I may shew thee the word of God’;  1S12:7: ‘Now therefore stand still, that I may reason with you before the Lord………’;  Job 37:14: ‘Hearken unto this, o Job: stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God’;  Ps 4:4: ‘Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still’).

JOHN 20:22:

"He breathed upon them and saith to them, receive ye the Holy Spirit"

In this text the word "breathed" is derived from the Greek "enethusysen", and is nowhere else to be found in the New Testament.

Jesus is about to leave the disciples for seven days, during which time they are to learn the reality of His Spiritual presence, so they would be able to recognise Him in their surroundings as the same uplifting Supernatural Force.    Christ communicated to this first gathering of the Church, the gift of spiritual insight, the God consciousness, the unity and community of life with Himself, which has been augmented in positive realization, in vivid proofs and mighty powers from that very hour on.

Whosoever enters into the sphere of that Divine Breath becomes "alive unto God" - this was the beginning of the Supernatural life of Christian consciousness.

PHYSIOLOGICAL  REASONS  IN  FAVOR OF MEDITATION:

“The breath of man has the power to heal anything.” When man consciously practice deep breathing while meditating, he relaxes and in a relaxed state of mind, slows down the electrical activity of the brain, and in doing so, three-dimensional health becomes a reality.

During the last few decades Western universities have become interested in meditation and the effects it has on the body.  A consistent neuro-physiological pattern has been identified.   During this deeply relaxed state the heart-rate slows down, there is a decrease in blood pressure, a decrease in oxygen consumption, a reduction in the blood lactate level (high levels of blood lactate is associated with anxiety), and the electrical activity of the brain changes.

Electrical activity of the brain involves an electrical impulse which is fired along the axon of one neuron to be received by the dendrites of the next neuron.    (Electrical activity is necessary for information transmission through the body).    In recent years it was discovered that the brain has the ability to change its vibrations, and in doing so, changes behaviour as well as involuntary functions of internal organs.

It is now an excepted dictum in Psychology that the benefits to be derived from meditation, are manifold, as it takes the body into a state of deep relaxation where the restoration of health on a three dimensional level takes place.

METHOD:

Sit in an upright chair with the spine straight and the eyes closed, feet a few inches apart, flat on the floor.    Concentrate on the breath, and follow the breath down to the inner self, conscious of nothing but the breath, until the mind/soul/spirit is still.   When everything is quiet, pray the Lords Prayer, (not aloud, in the mind only), while remaining in the innermost depths of the spirit.      After the Lords Prayer, remain in this silence to simply exist in God, and experience His presence.   This is the prime meditation of the day, and should be done for approximately 20 minutes per day.

Within a couple of days, the meditator  begins to experience various changes in his life, and eventually  destructive emotions and anxieties such as fear, anger and guilt, begin to disappear.    He feels the difference on a physical, emotional and spiritual level.

As people learn and grow within meditation, other little meditations start to 'pop-up' from within, and eventually there is an inevitable linkage between the various meditations, until a point of  "praying without ceasing" is reached.    The Subconscious mind/soul/spirit becomes accustomed to the Omnipresence of the Trinity of God, and this awareness eventually stretches to last in every moment of every day.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon , renowned nineteenth century preacher, said of meditation: "Meditation chews the cud and extracts the real nutriment from the mental food gathered elsewhere.   When JESUS is the theme, meditation is sweet indeed.   Isaac found Rebecca while engaged in private musings;  many others have found their best beloved there."

This is the ultimate way of living for the Christian meditator, the Christian mystic.

May GOD bless you in all that you do, for today, tomorrow and evermore.
