Body Weight and Weight Loss

What is Body Mass Index?

Body Mass Index, or BMI, is a calculation of body fat based upon both your height and your weight.  BMI

uses metric measures (height in meters and weight in kilograms), but you can easily convert your height in feet

and inches and weight in pounds by using a simple online calculator.  Please note that this calculator is for adults

aged 20 and older and is not appropriate for adolescents who are still growing and undergoing many

physical changes.  For teens, a BMI-for-Age is calculated and then plotted on a growth chart that is specific for

females or males aged 2 to 20.  This adult calculator is offered here only as a guide, and also as a reference for you

later in life.

Once a person calculates her or his BMI, she/he can determine whether she/he is underweight, normal weight,

overweight, or obese according to the following:  (Again, these are values for adults!)

  • You are Underweight if your BMI is less than 18.5
  • You are at Normal weight if your BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9
  • You are Overweight if your BMI is between 25 and 29.9
  • You are Obese if your BMI is 30 or greater

It is important to note that BMI may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a very muscular build.

Losing Weight the Healthy Way

If you think you need to lose weight, you should speak with your doctor first to verify that you actually do need to

lose weight.  If your doctor thinks you do, then she or he will speak to you about how to do it in a safe, healthy way.

The most important behaviors to consider are your diet and your level of physical activity or exercise.  It is NEVER a

good idea to skip meals or stop eating a variety of foods in order to lose weight.  Your body needs vitamins, minerals,

and protein to maintain strength and vitality, and you can do damage if you deprive your body of these things!

Do you know how many calories you should be getting each day based on your age & level of physical activity?  If not,

check out what the FDA recommends for someone your age and with your level of activity.

Finally, if you need to lose weight (that is, you and your doctor have determined you need to lose weight) and you

need some encouragement, don't hesitate to ask your Starlings Directors for support.  We can also refer

you to centers that specialize in adolescent health so you can plan your weight loss in a safe, healthy manner!
