NY, FH playoff bound, SHS wins
HS FOOTBALL
Two Athens County football teams are playoff bound as the Federal Hocking Lancers visit Johnstown-Monroe and Nelsonville-York hosts Gahanna Columbus Academy this Saturday night at 7 p.m.

The Lancers are making their first ever playoff appearance after completing the team's best record of 9-1 on the year and capturing its first Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division sole championship.

Federal Hocking is coming off a 36-13 win over Waterford and carries a nine-game winning streak into this playoff berth. The team has scored 237 points on the year but its strength lies in its defense which has given up just 54 points on the season. Being 5-0 in road games this season sets up an intriguing match-up as Johnstown-Monroe is 5-0 at home this year and will host.

The Johnnies have won two straight with momentum after a 16-12 victory over Northridge on Friday. Johnstown-Monroe has 313 points to its credit and has yielded 169 points. This is the team's second appearance in the playoffs, losing its only game in 2002.

Federal Hocking is the sixth seed in the tournament while Johnstown-Monroe is fifth.

Nelsonville-York will get to show off its brand new synthetic field on Saturday, hoping to get out of the first round against Gahanna Columbus Academy. The Buckeyes have been to the playoffs the last three seasons but have lost in round one each time.

Nelsonville-York is making its 11th appearance in postseason play with a 19-12 overall mark in that time. Columbus Academy is making its 10th appearance, winning the state championship as recent as 2003. The Vikings made a late season move from 15th going into week nine to sixth seed after the week 10 win over Bexley. The team has yielded 237 points but scored 387 on the year with a 3-2 record on the road.

Nelsonville-York is the third seed with 333 points scored this year and 116 points allowed. The team is 4-1 at home with seven consecutive wins, including a 34-6 victory over Alexander on Friday.

The games will be played on Saturday with 7 p.m. start times for both.

Southern finishes with victory

The Southern Tornadoes fought through rain-soaked fields to earn a 40-8 victory over the Eastern Eagles on Saturday night, closing out the high school football season for both teams.

Southern finishes at 6-4 on the year with a 2-3 mark in the Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division while Eastern ends the year at 0-10.
