Quinta Cabra-Figo

The pictures above show the work on our straw bale building. The skeleton is almost ready. This summer 2004 we hope to finish the structure by placing the straw bales around it and claying the walls inside and outside. We then can spend the winter to finish the inside.

Straw bale buildings are an old rediscovered building form that where successfully presented at the Sustainable Energy Conference of 2003. They not only have a remarkable isolation value, but are also very healthy to live in because of the special qualities of the walls.

We discovered that straw once has been used in buildings in Portugal. Especially in places where 'pedras' became scarce, people made wooden walls and stuck straw in between before claying of the walls. Return
