Bergstrom Winery
2007
Our second trip to Bergstrom Winery was in the fall of 2007. Harvest was for the most part over and wine was fermenting in the vats when we arrived.

Winemaker, Josh Bergstrom met up with Carolyn and I to go through the fermenting and barrel rooms to show us how the 2007 harvest was progressing. He was really excited about the new Freres oak foudres he just started using with the 2007 vintage. A foudre is a large oak cask, larger than an oak barrel, and used for aging wine.

After visiting with Josh (he went to pick up his kids) we headed for the tasting room where we met up with his mom Karen for a tasting of Bergstrom's best. We tried several white and red wines with some of our favorites being:

2006 Willamette Valley Chardonnay
The first they have produced since the 2002 vintage. It demonstrates rich and opulent aromas of pineapples and a hint of lemon framed by the 40% French oak used in the ageing of the wine. $35

2006 Dr. Bergstrom Riesling
Tropical and citrus fruits are present in this stainless steel and oak fermented Riesling. It has great acidity. $25

2006 Bergstrom Shea Pinot Noir
The 06 Shea had been recently bottled when we tasted it last fall and was not quite ready yet, but at a recent tasting in Bend this wine has evolved and is drinking beautifully. The deep scarlet color emoted dark fruit and sweet ripeness. Shows raspberries and dark cherries with a hint of spice. $65

2006 Bergstrom Cumberland Reserve
This wine has been a value hit every year and this vintage once again hits it out of the park!. A multi vineyard blend (15 this year) the 2006 Cumberland Reserve shows youthful aromas of bright cherry, currant, spices and chocolate. This is a winner not to be missed. $45

They also offer daily progressive tasting experiences at 10:00, 11:30, 2:00 and 3:30. This is a 1 1/2 hour adventure through the barrel room, winery and the Tasting Room. Wines are paired with the appropriate Riedel stemware. The tasting fee is $25 and reservations are required. Call the number above to make a reservation.

We encourage you to visit the Bergstrom link on this page to find out more about this fabulous winery and the people responsible for these great wines.

Northwest Wine Fan has very limited quantities of these and other Bergstrom wines available for purchase. Inquire by email or by telephone.
