Week One Assignment:
Component A
1. Website - http://www.spanishstudies.com/
Spanishstudies.com is a links site the grants access to a
wide variety of Latin America links. Included in these is a number of humanities
links, which include artists, authors and museum information. Spanishstudies.com
covers 18 nations, providing valuable links to internet resources that are not
always obvious in searches on google.
Browsing the site's links, I was able to find information
on government, economics, education, society issues, tourism and various other
important topics to the humanities. Spanishstudies.com provides a gateway to
important Latin America sites, posts links to articles that would otherwise
be buried and provides topics that I would have not otherwise thought of myself.
Although this site isn't as important as some of the pure informational sites,
I found the opportunity found within the site provided more context than any
of the other sites that I visited.
2. Website - http://www.latinart.com/
Unlike Spanishstudies.com, Latinart.com provides a wealth
of information for its visitors and does not rely on links to provide "context"
for Latin America. One of my favorite aspects of the humanities is the arts,
and thus this site was nothing short of a delight. It features artists, art
issues and featured exhibitions, providing both text and graphics for immediate
viewing. The site can be viewed in either English or Spanish, and is free to
the public. Artists' works can be clicked on and enlarged for better viewing,
and artist biographies are in-depth and well written.
The site is easy to navigate, and information is easily found.
I found the art glossary very interesting, providing a resource for art beginners
who have come to the site in search of an introduction to Latin art. Specific
and thorough, I'd recommend Latinart.com to any student of the humanities, or
anyone who might classify himself or herself as an art junkie.
3. Website - http://www.latinnews.com/
Current events can provide a gateway to the humanities, and
Latinnews.com is one of the better sites on the web for finding current news
stories of Latin America. This publication provides free access to a large number
of recent articles, and is in English. I don't believe this site would be very
good to research a specific topic, but it's excellent if you just want a large
number of news articles on various topics from Latin America.
The articles hosted on this site are full of statistics, political
and economic information. The site also has a scrolling ticker that displays
the most recent headlines. If you're looking for political articles, you won't
find much better than latinnews.com.
Component B
Website - http://www.motherjones.com/mother_jones/MJ94/krasny.html
I was pleasantly surprised to find this link after much google
searching. I've read a few of the authors listed, and respect their opinion.
I couldn't find a better panel of individuals to answer the question: "what
is community".
