Etiquette of PVP

First off lets talk a little about what PVP is and how it came to be in NWN.

PVP stands for player verse's player. Back in 1991 when Neverwinter nights first came on the scene, the programmers hadn't considered the want of one player to fight and kill another, thus PVP was never programmed into the game. However, it didn't take long before some evil aligned characters discovered a bug in the programming... tho you could not physically attack another player, you could cast magic spells at him and with a little practice, kill him. It was thus that PVP was born. It has become a major part of the game sense, with staff having to outlaw it in some areas to allow players that where unprepared, or did not want, to PVP a place to play their game without the fear of being jumped by the increasing number of evil players.

Now that we all know what PVP is.. let get into the general rules of conduct for PVP in NWN.

The first thing you should be aware of is... If you don't want to PVP, stay clear of PVP areas. To enter a PVP area is to open yourself up to being jumped and attacked by other players in the area.

Reentering a fight you have fled, or died in is a big no-no. Granted this is just a game, and it is possible to reenter fights, but we like to keep it as real as possible. If you were to die or run away from a real battle... by the time you where resurrected, or memorized the spells you wanted.. the battle would no longer be there... thus you would not be able to reenter that fight.

Use of the spell "silence" on a player is another no-no. You can cast silence on NPC's (non player char.) and get the area affect of the spell to silence a player. The only time you should see silence cast at a player is if that player has reentered a fight. Many players will do this to discourage the "cheating" reentering of other players

Dispel Magic.. this is a tuff one. Basically the use of what we call a "direct dis" is frowned upon. A direct dis is the casting of Dispel Magic at an opponent (or adjoining square) when the only purpose is to dis that player. "Bonus Dis's" are allowed, this is the act of casting dispel magic at the location of or adjoining square of a held or clumbsy'd team mate, and allowing the range affect of the spell to "bonus" opponents. Now.. to further confuse you.. you will see some of the evil players casting a "direct dis". If you want to do this... expect to have the action returned. Basically "good aligned" char.'s never direct dis.

Play your alignment... good players will never attack another good player, and normally will only attack evil players in the defense of themselves, friends, or areas. True Neutral players strive for the "balance", thus should normaly side with the weaker side to even things out.

If your interested in the PVP aspect of the game, check out the Guilds area. Learn what Guilds are into PVP, and who are the good or evil Guilds... Many players from these Guilds will be glad to take you out and teach you some things about PVP. However, be warned, the lessons you get from the evil Guilds might not be the lesson you want :)
