Well, alrighty then, here's my thoughts tossed into what i'm sure will eventually be a large pile of interesting comments ;D

Okay, the thing I've always felt to be the best part of NeverWinter Nights is it's it's own community. I came here, I'd estimate a bit more than two years back, and immediately I noticed the trends that were created by NeverWinter's legendary players.

I really think that's what makes NeverWinter best, the entire community is/was built by the *players* of the game. Not people who are payed to create a world, people who do it just becuase they love doing it. Proffesional designers may have decided which ways the paths in the Lost hills turn, but the players are the ruling force as to what's done in those hills.

Every enjoyable aspect of this game is becuase of what players have made it. It's players' terms, not AOLs or TOS's that makes you think twice before dir dissing a player in a PVP fight. It's players that create the stories that make NeverWinter such an enormous wealth of quality Role-play and stories. The game is built out of love for all these things and more.

An interesting point to NWN and sometimes is overlooked...is its limitations on levels. Many consider this to be a downside of the game, But in truth it makes the game a little more enjoyable, for when everyone is at the same level, the only thing left is to play from the heart, and imigination of the players, and not the drive of getting more levels. This helps to make the players, make NWN a game, played by people that enjoy for what it is...a fun game.

The reason I play NWN is because of the uncertain interaction between players. As with most games after awhile its becomes boring and monotonious. But with NWN the players constantly change and evolve making it the most unique game ever. One moment you are friends and the next moment a backstab comes outta nowhere. With that game play your always on your toes.

Why do we play? A good question....Those of us who play play a game that was made obsolete more than a decade ago....a game that uses graphics from the days of 8088 and Commodore 64 computers (yes...I first played the NWN-style Gold box games on my pals 64)...You would htink with games out like Meridian 57 (59?) we would have run off and left NWN for good..and yet, through the blight of the "Timer" and the "Gate Crash" fiasco we are currently involved with, we stay...even if that means we have to spend half an hour trying to gain access to the game only to be punted off 15 minutes later...

Why though...Why would we put ourselves through this torture? Why do we spend time to write these words upon our computer screens? The answer to that simple question is more complex than any one of us can explain...

Some of us do it for the adventure....I've never seen a dragon with my own eyes, except on the covers of the fantasy books I sometimes glance through at the bookstores, but yet I've killed thousands of them while playing this game...Originally, that was my drive for my playing...500 dollars a month spent to see what new place I could find...what new fight I could trig...what new item I could acquire....

Then there's the one's who do it for the "PvP"...This phase I went through also...Ladder matches.... Free-For-Alls... "Jumping" people in the Hills...Jabbing at your opponent with words as well as spells, and knowing that somewhere out there someone was cringing as your spell hit him...

Acourse....There's yet another part of the game that most of the people are here for....And that is those very people....I always wondered when I was a newb learning the realms how someone could sit in the square for hours, even days (yes...I sat in the square once for near 60 hours straight once) and just talk...Now that I've become proficient at the gaming aspect...I've come to enjoy the role playing and the intereaction between the different people and the characters they play...There's nothing like it anywhere else...Having nearly 40 people talking at once from closeby...and having another 40 talking to you from around the realms...It's confsing sometimes...but wow, is it fun!

Neverwinter Scrolls
As told by Larenall the Bard
Introduction
It was in my ninteenth year on a beautiful spring day when I first learned of time before the coming of Neverwinter Nights.

That morning I wanderd through the woods attempting to find a bit of inspiration for a poem or story. I must admit, Neverwinter Wood is quite a dangerous place, especially for one such as myself, traveling alone. Yet, I tossed fear aside. My mind filled with a search (for I did not know what) caused me to be completely oblivious to the emotion.

For hours I walked through the brush under the canopy of limbs high above. All the while not finding anything of note. In fact the only thing that drew my attention was the stillness and quiet of the area. There was a slight breeze which quietly blew by and rustled some leaves and underbrush every now and then but nothing more. That is except a series of low thuds each accompanied by an ever so slight tremble of the ground. This, I normally would have found strange except I had never ventured into the wood before and its consistency made me think it was a normal occurance. After traveling for some time I became accustomed to it and soon its existance all but left my mind.

Around mid-day the underbrush began to fade and then disappear. Then the trees began to spread apart and lessen in number. Before I knew it I was standing in a clearing next to a wide stream. As I looked up I saw the sun at its peak bearing down on me with all its splendor. This being a mistake for I was nearly blinded. My eyes unadjusted to the bright light which the forest had shielded.

What happend next still shocks me to this day. There I stood, hunched over, rubbing my eyes, when suddenly I sensed a putrid smell from behind as the breeze switched direction. I turned and attempted to see from where or what it came but before the blurr cleared from my vision a loud and thunderous cry of agony assaulted my ears. Then a gust of wind rushed down apon me as I heard a tremendous thud which shook the very ground on which I stood, causing me to stumble and fall. All I could do was lay there with my heart pounding, and pray that I lived to see what had happend.

After what seemed and eternity I opend my eyes and my jaw dropped as I took in the sight. Not inches from where I had stood lay the far end of an enormous club, grasped tightly in the hands of a very dead giant. Its spine split in two by a deep gouge running the length of its back. The sight was awful, blood and guts seeped slowly out of the wound. Yet what disturbed me the most was how close I had avoided having my precious skull caved in. Then it occured to me that I hadn't 'avoided' death, somone, or something atleast, had saved my defenseless self from an early grave.

I shook off my daze, looked up and spotted a cloaked figure as he raised from a kneeling position runnning each side of his blade across a leg of the giant, seemingly to wipe the blood from it. The sunlight glinted off the blade as he sheathed it under his cloak. He then turned and began to walk towards me. As he approached I noticed a long bow thrown over his sholder and some arrows sticking out from a quiver on his back. He was a tall and slender fellow who silently glided across the ground with a graceful likeness to that of an experienced ranger. His movements however, were more fluid than that of any human I ever met. When he closed to a yard or so he stopped and pulled back the hood of his cloak. His hair was white as snow. His ears crested in well defined points and he had skin toned blue. I was dumbfounded, for never before had I even so much as heard of a race of such color. My face must have betrayed my thoughts but yet he did not seem to take notice (later it occured to me that he must be accustomed to the expression). He just reached his hand out in greeting and said "You are unharmed, I hope."

I quickly attempted to compose myself managing to spit out "um... yea... i'm ok." To which he replied with a nod and "Now might I ask why you are here? other than to become lost," he paused and glanced over at the giant "or dinner?" I almost attempted to defend my pride when I realized that I really didn't know where I was, though I'm still not sure how he knew (He had included it as a fact, in his question, not as part of it). Then luckily it came back to me. "I am a bard in search of a new tale." At first he looked at me like I was and idiot for looking here for a tale but then suddely a light gleamed in his eye and he smiled. "Well now young one, if it's a tale you desire then a tale you shall have." He then motioned for me to follow as he strode off toward the wood. "A tale of history long forgotten and even less believed"

~I spent the rest of the afternoon and most of the eve sitting by a camp fire, eating some delicous spittled rabbit and listening to RouseE's tale.~
Part 2
We devoured the rabbit which RouseE had so easily aquired on our way to his camp sight and then cooked to taste. After fullfilling my hunger I sat back and awaited the tale he had promised. I watched as he removed a small prism from his pouch and placed it in the camp fire. He then scattered some stange powder among the flames and mutterd an incantation. Soon a cloud of colored smoke formed and swirled as it sustained itself in a small area just above the reach of the flame.

Then he began his tale. "In a time long past in a life long forgotten there exists beings of unsurpassed power." As he spoke the colored smoke began to form into images which changed to the beck and call of his words.

"Let us call them the creators. This is for they have the ability to create existance with their mere thoughts. Now the only problem was that to them it was just thought, for their created existances never affected their own being while to the contrary any being in their created existance was affected by the whims of their thoughts just as the creators were affected by any change in thier own existance." The image of silowetted beings of humanoid form with multiverses floating in contained enviroments above them formed above the flames.

"Of these creators there was a collective group, counsel if you will, reffered to as TSR, whos thoughts merged to form a collective existance. TSR spent much time working on this existance and after some time concluded that others might like to enjoy their creation which they dubbed "AD&D". They created links to their tailored existance in the form of books, much like the ones we use today, and provided them to others like themselves." The smoke shifted to the form of one of the books.

"Many creators spent their free time enjoying "AD&D", but after time a problem arised. As the creators existance and the creators themselves evolved many found happenings in their own existance causing it harder and too time consuming to have to control both the existance and the beings in it. A group of beings and most likely many others also thought it would be nice to have certain aspects of "AD&D", predefined if you will, so that they could spend their thought and time enjoying a defined existance instead of having to create it themselves based on the guidelines which were part of the link."

"This new group, reffered to as SSI, gathered together and in collation with TSR formed a new type of link in the form of a crystal box. Many loved this new link to "AD&D" and spent quite a bit of their time alone with their links enjoying the 'predefined' existance." The picture of a creator linked to a odd looking 'crystal box' forms in the colored smoke.

"Now throught this time of the creators existance other counsels began to follow in TSR's footsteps. Both before and after the new links, attempting to create an existance as favorable as "AD&D". Many came close but most beings either stuck with or returned to "AD&D". It's unknown why, but my guess is that over time it evolved, and not because of counsel altered guidelines but because of others who enjoyed its existance, basically forming a history which was a quality that others just could not reproduce."

"After time another problem arrised. The creators enjoyed the 'predefined existance' provided by the new links but yet missed the companionship of enjoying the existance with other creators. TSR and SSI noticed this and also realized that the existance would take better form if the majority of the beings in it were created and controled individually by different creators, so the two counsels collaberated and produced a solution."

"The solution was a 'predefined' collective existance which they dubbed Neverwinter Nights. This was made possible by a new discovery which connected all the new links together. Allowing any being to visit the existance at any time without having to be in the same location at the same time as any other being who desired to visit."

At this point I must have been staring at RouseE with blatant disbelief on my face for he looked at me and said "Believe what you will but you came looking for a tale and now you have it." He was getting ready to say something else when I butted in with "but thats blasphamey! What of the gods? What of you and I?"

He shook his head with a look of disapointment on his face. "Calm down young one. Mayhaps I should not have chosen to tell you but I did." He paused and took a deep breath. "I cannot atest to the truth or reality of any portion or part of my tale. I only know it as the Scrolls of Neverwinter. I know not of it ever being recorded and do not know how it came into my mind, yet it is a grand tale indeed and you may do with it as you see fit so long as you do not alter it." The colored smoke dissapated and RouseE retrived his prism from the smoking ashes of the camp fire.

"I understand that Neverwinter Nights has since its creation evovled greatly into a community all its own, somehow managing to form bonds between creators which no other similar existance has been able to do."

"I 'can' atest that we, the beings of Neverwinter Nights, have without the ability to change the natural laws of our world managed to alter it irreversably through our own interaction. Lingo has been created and alterted. As has etiquette, laws (of war and others). Trends have been started and followed and pushed out of the way by new ones. In general there is a way to do things and a way not to do things all formed, followed, and I'm sure soon to be altered by us, not by the physics which limit us."

"If I was one to philosophise I would think that we may some day follow in the footsteps of the creators and form the ability to create our own existances. But I'm not and one of the main reasons for that is I'm quite content living my own existance and care not whether I am actually a creation of some other being."

~On that note RouseE ended his tale and told me he would escort me home in the morning~

Conclusion
I awoke the next day in my bed, unsure whether or not it had all just been a strange dream. I reached into my pouch and retrieved my wrting scrolls. I unrolled them to discover it had not. RouseE's entire tale was captured in ink just as I had dreamt... um I mean just as I remember writing it.

I read the tale and after some thought decided it best left untold. I placed the scrolls in hiding and left them there to stay. I never again saw RouseE other than in passing, in which case I decided not to approach him for he 'seemed' to not notice me.

After some time I all but forgot about the tale, that is until today. I was in sitting in Striders practicing my trade when one of Lord Nashers Royal Guard arrived (more like busted in) and kindly (ha!) 'escorted' me to see NW Baldor. Apon his inquirey, I retrived the scrolls from hiding and handed them over.

I'm not quite sure how Baldor came by knowledge of their existance though I suspect RouseE may have had something to do with it. If so I'll be sure to cause him to be the vic... I mean the happy recevior of the royal guards hospitallity sometime.

I play NWN for a number of reasons -- the most important reason is the recreation value. In NWN you have the tools to play any charater you want to be -- escaping the pressures of real life for a few short hours.

The second reason is the building friendships. I have been playing for well over 3 years and people tend to come and go here relatively quick making for explosive stories. There are those lasting players who contribute to the game with their outstanding roleplay that keep me coming back.

Further, I must commend the staff of NWN. I have played other on-line RP games (even worked a few) and found that the staff system is by far the best in NWN. ::salutes::

There are a few reasons I play NWN..... I started playing not too long ago, about 6 or 7 months. I played because I love AD&D and everything it offered. I loved being able to be some one and some thing you're not. My first character (I still use him) was a paladin named Pyscho John. He evolved from being a lowly half-elf Cleric/Fighter/Mage to a human paladin. From there he underwent another transformation. From an ordinary human to a finhead saurial, like the legendary Dragonbait of the Finder's Stone trilogy, with the ability to communicate telepathically with others. From there he evolved into the half-saurial/half-solar dragon, mentor of a weredragon, son of the avatar of Bahamut he is today. And the great thing is, even though people viewing my character see Human Paladin, everyone knows that I'm a finhead saurial, the only one walking in Neverwinter. My next character was Lok Pirvan. He underwent a great many changes. He started off being a character to what he is today; a powerful cleric/mage with an evil clone, the love of a weredragon, the avenger, and the Corrections Officer to the Lords of Krynn. My newest, and perhaps greatest, character is Lok Navrip. He went through many changes, from being the evil clone of Pirvan, to the leader of his own guild, to the unwitting servant to MECH, to the devoted and honorable Knight of Takhisis, Protector of the Skull, Metal Knight he is today. Another reason I play is the social interaction. You can meet people who won't base you on how you look, but how you act. I have many friends in NWN (some of them being enemies of my other characters). No matter what, I can always trust those I call friend. I also have many enemies in NWN. When ever I'm bored, I can just go and look them up and there's a good time waiting to happen. There's nothing that can take these aspects away from NWN, ever.

...Lok Navrip

To me Neverwinter is a place that I can be something that I couldent in life and to do things I could not in real life.

... EB Risen

The community, NWN has the best group of people you can find... While we may have flaming wars sometimes, and we toss the word 'newb' a little frequently, NWN is a real community, where people care for each toehr, care about each other. I'll have been playing for almost a year real soon, and in this year I have met over 400 people, and made friends with each and everyone of them. And then theres the 1000 I made enemies with, oh well can't win them all!

From: Sir Redrum
I play for a couple reasons: NWN offers alot of interaction between players. Its fun to meet old friends, and make new friends in NWN, cause you can do things with them that you couldn't do offline. From helping a newer player, who might actually be 2000 miles away from you in real life, to exploring areas of the game with friends, and even role playing battles against enemies. NWN offers excellent combat rules (AD&D 1st Edition rules), and combat against monsters or enemies can actually requires alot of strategy. You can team up with friends to battle a common foe, or just fight solo and pray you survive. While in combat you see the action from a top-down view, which helps you plan to strategy and also helps you decide where you want to move (yes! you can move around on the battlefield, unlike some other games). Combat is turned based, which gives you time to plan and execute a strategy also. Reddy Oh, for some of the newer players since Dec 1st ..... Reason for playing: ITS FREE!! ;) Lol! ;)

I like NWN because it's simple, easy to use and learn. plus you can chat with over 400 other gamers playing your game at the same time as you with out any real lag. None of the competition can say that as they all spout fancy graphics, real-time gaming, etc. You cannot have your cake and eat it too. The gold Box games from TSR were alway so involved and fun. even though the graphics are 286'sh

From: SOMNeranek
IMHO, the timing of this folder (which is a great idea) has been overshadowed by the lovely rumours that abound regarding the new pricing structure for the gaming areas. Somehow it seems ironic, we celebrate the anniversary of NW with tales of how and why we care for it, and then in the next folder down, lament it's destruction. Anyway, to be more on topic, I have enjoyed NWN for all these years for the simple community that it has offered. Yes, after awhile you could get the attitude that you have "been there, done that" as there are only so many areas to explore. However, I have always been more interested in the role-playing aspects of the game over the drac-bashing side of things. I have found it personaly rewarding every time that you have seen that first spark of wonder and excitement in a new players "face" as you have helped them out, or taken them out on a quest. Many of these "newbies" over the years have become close friends that I have shared life's little truimphs and especially in this last year, life's sorrows. The unlimited pricing plan is such a mixed bag. It's unbelievable cheaper to play now that it has been in years past. However, now you have to work to get into the game due to the overcrowding brought about, both by the influx of new players, and the veterans staying in the game all day long. All of the new players means a whole new group of potential new friends, but at the same time, they can also be overwhelming due to sheer volume. I enjoy the aspect of having a ready-made community available for inclusion in rp works of fiction for community sharing on the guilds boards. It is a much more interactive experience and of course, you receive instant feedback. So, even if the pricing plans do change again, Ye'll all still find this clericmage of Mystra spreading the faith and maintaining the weave in and around the city of NeverWinter.

From: Sol Bigby Dern it. We play NWN because of the community, the people. I'm not exactly sure if the game is gone or not, but one thing I'm sure of... I'll miss all of my friends I've met through this game.. Twas fun, we shared many laughs and good times... I'm actually gonna miss some of them evils out there too.

From: Peraslax For three years this was my home. I've watched people and even entire guilds come and go. I've been jumped, feebed, gated, cursed and laughed at and loved every minute of it. I've made freinds here, met their families and opened my house to them. This was truly a "family community" that AOL is always bragging about. In fact, it's the only thing I've found in AOL or the internet that came close to that brag. Now it's stripped from us and we are supposed to be appeased by the sleek new 95 games that will replace this. When I think back on literally the thousands of dollars I've dumped into this game I have to wonder what happened to loyalty to the customer. I know customer loyalty was no problem. That doesn't matter tho. Too old fashioned a concept I suppose. My first instinct was to cancell as soon as I heard the news. But I guess I will wait till doomsay and go out with the game. On that day AOL will see the last dollar they will ever collect from me. Good luck in your adventuings to you all. It's been a real blast.

From: ABK Seeker I will tell you why we played (yes past tense) NWN. We could gather in groups and have some fun. There was a life to the game. Outside of the game you could get letters from all over the country from all of your gaming friends. You could invent something that did not happen and tell the tale on the boards, like that drunken party when you got promoted, and your friends would strive to make you get into more trouble than you could without going to jail. Why did I play? I played because I have played D&D for so many years, it makes me feel old to think about it. I just like to remember the times past with my gaming friends, and to try and strive for new memories every time I get into the game (that is not an easy attempt on even a good day, and they say that NWN is dying). I will tell you what killed NWN. No upgrades. AOL period. That is what was good and what is bad about the game. Real life it wasn't, but it was close enough for us to enjoy it. I will miss it greatly, and I know for a fact that even when the game is long gone, I will still remember my days in NWN. Till the swords cross, my friends. I shall remember you all!

From: W Alpha About Neverwinter Nights... Look and listen. I will only explain myself once. I went to NWN 7 months ago. I instantly fell in love. Every day you see new people inside of the game. EVERY day. Now, I go to NWN every chance I get. Do you have any clue what holds the people togather as friends there? Most of us have major problems with ourselves off the CPU. Me for example am a chronic depressionist. I have almost died 5 times and almost killed myself three others. I goto NWN and no where else on AOL because its the ONLY place worth my time. I have friends there, I have family there. Its not the way it looks, but how fun it is. Its not that no one wants to go there, because before your stupid idea came to, I could never get in. Now, all of us are banding togather against playing your new games. We won't pay to play. We won't go anywhere, because nothing your services have can't compair to Neverwinter Nights, which, I belive to be one of the altime greatest games I've ever played. Now, when will you realize that almost all of the NWN culture's going to complain about your two "wonderful" ideas? Pay to play, we already do. That's the only reason we come online, we pay 20$ a month to play Neverwinter Nights. But your other games? Personally, I never touch 'em. If I wanted War Carft, I'd buy it. Castles II? A strategy game isn't going to cut it against an RPG that was better than any other I've played. You are seperating us from our family. You are taking us from our home. Please look at the foolishness, unless you're blind to anything other than money, and in that case, look at the fact that we refuse to play yer other "better" games.

From: HealFire I used to play this game over 4hours a day and never thought I would see the day when they would cancel this game. In this game I have people who are almost like real life best friends. Almost no other game can copy what this game has acomplished. There is no reason to delete it anyway. I could care less if they updated it or not because it could just change the reason why I play it. I know a lot of people on this game are feeling the same way I feel about this. This will actually probaly make them lose money. The game would probaly be the most popular if it wasn't on Aol ,but another online service. Well, tis been fun my comrades at arms. Now I have to finally put my sword down for good.

From: ROGER78 This Message I post from my formor self Sir Roger. A month ago I elected to depart realm because I couldnt take the crushing blow that I knew was to be delt by AOL, I felt short and sweet was in order. Well, after returning today to check in, I see the Demons have decided. I will not blame anyone, as this is a game. But I have spent the LAST 6 YEARS HERE PLAYING, AS A MEMBER OF THE BROTHERHOOD OF PATHFINDERS! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEE!! I joined AOL for NWN, I played the game probably as voraciously or more than any other, I held guild officer positions, a short stint as staff, and met and taught hundreds the game, all out of the spirit of adventure. The events, the staff, the people, the game itself are why I played. I will remain on AOL simply for Email and other minor interests, but I cannot fathom reaching the level of use as I did playing this game. I have tried every major and minor RP service and none have the excitement and community as NWN does. The Base game that NWN derives from started this whole role playing business to begin with. I believe the gold box seris of games and the ensuing other series have been played by all here. The original game of Pools of Radience was made in 1986!! it is still for sale and being bought in one form or another. The game has 16 color ega class graphics! but its the endless play value that makes it great!! that is the same for NWN!! I would hope the wizards of the coast, TSR, SSI, or whoever owns the code this game see that it IS NOT !! i REPEAT NOT!! THE HIGHSPEED GRAPHICS, SOUND ETC THAT MAKE PEOPLE PLAY!! IT THE COMMUNITY AND SPIRIT OF COMMRODERIE THAT ONE EXPERIENCES DURING A QUEST WITH 6- 8 OTHERS IN A PARTY! I feel this is as Ignorant a decison as AOL could make, but they are not known generally for Their Forthought.Well lets see, there are hundreds of players in a game area that is the longest running multiplayer game online anywhere, it low speed graphics, yet people stay online for Hours playing. Lets see if we can mess this up by cancelling it right out from under them! Again they have shown their colors Be well all, Fair seas, fair weather, Good Journeys, Dysfunctional Pathfinder of old, ::::Gathers pack, grips walking staff, looks east from Neverwinter walls..... ::::thinks..... a shame... must be better lands ahead.... east into the Fringes of Faerun.... ::::head down in utter confusion, bewildered, and heart wrenched.... walks away towards the march east::
