If you live in or near the Southern Highlands of Australia, you might like to read this about The Southern Highlands Shakespeare Festival 1997. This runs from April 16-27.

I picked these up some time ago from a server in England. Some of them required very minor work to be a in a consistent format--Act instead of ACT in some places, for instance--but such things have been fixed. You can browse through the list below or fill in the form to search for specific phrases.

The original electronic source for this server is the Complete Moby(tm) Shakespeare, which is freely available online. You may want to read a brief note on differences (from MIT's Shakespeare server) between this version and other versions with which you you may be familiar.

Please note that I am in no way an expert on Shakespeare or his works. I am unable to answer the many (often thinly disguised) requests for help with homework, school essays or reports. This list of other sites may be of more help to you. Please don't contact me with requests like `Where does ``...'' come from?' That's why this page is here.

Please have a browse and sign my visitors' book.

This site has been nominated among the top 5% of sites according to the Point Communications web survey. It's also been awarded 4 stars by Magellan, their highest rating.

Fill in the form (instructions) or, if your browser lacks support for forms, use the non-forms search to search the works of Shakespeare. Choose the plays/items you wish to search, the amount of context and enter the search text itself. If you have what you think are technical problems please contact me.

Please either select plays by name from within the selection list or select a category to search using the checkboxes. Selecting both is not necessary when the category contains the play.

Items followed by [segmented HTML] have been segmented and converted to HTML. To view the files in all their glory you will need support in your browser for tables. Plain text versions of the HTML files are also available--go to the HTML document and follow the link at the top of that document. My examination of the HTML files has been cursory, please notify me of any errors/typos you may find. I have split the plays into one file per act with a table of contents (plus a full HTML version and text version) for each file.

Currently you can fetch a gzipped tar-file [2039k] of the complete plain text versions. The plain text for each play is also available from the top of each HTML page.

Search instructions

The lines of context is the number of lines to display on either side of occurrences of the search string when presenting the results. The text string is an agrep regular expression. Regular expressions are currently limited in size.

Search example

To find the word `estimate' in the Sonnets, you would enter a query for 15 lines of context with the search term estimate on the target Sonnets.
