LITTLE TWINK SAVES A LIFE
Ana Schofield
Around 2:30 on sunny Sunday March 18th, I was happily walking with my 4 pound Yorkie named Twink on a bridge across a stream in Olympia, Washington's Watershed Park.  Just a few feet from the bridge, tree bark popped from the trunk of a large tree. Could it be a palliated woodpecker making a hole in the tree for a nest?

While bending to hear the babble of the lovely brook beneath the wooden bridge: imagining that this would make super audio for the DVD I was producing, Twink suddenly squealed as never before, and ran up the path as if chased by a bat from hell.

Twink's high alert brought me to full attention.  Then I looked up to see the tree, now groaning like a banshee, slowly but surely coming down right on top of me.  My legs took off toward Twink faster than she could blink an eye.  She was anxiously waiting for me just a bit ahead, near the bend in the trail.

"RUN TWINK RUN", I shouted,  not knowing if the trunk or branches would land on us.  I looked back briefly to check for the best direction in which to run.  Right then, just fifteen yards away, the tree trunk - about 3 feet in diameter - hit the bridge with an echoing thud right where Twink and I had been moments before.

Twink was shaking!  I picked her up and held her close to my racing heart.  Walking home slowly along the trail, I imagined what it may be like to be dead.  I was relieved in a flash to recall that my underwear was clean and that the dishes were done.

Twink and I shared a spaghetti dinner that night.  I had a glass of home made blackberry and apple wine - the ingredients for which had been gathered last summer from the wild - to celebrate that life is good.  Best I pay closer attention to Nature in all of her glory and horror and more fully appreciate that 4 pounds of love is a whole lot of lovin'!
