BRIEFING GUIDE - SYMPOSIUM ON PLATE TECTONICS

Choose one person from your group to play the part of the leading scientist (he/she should be a different person than the one you chose for the continental drift symposium).  Your group will have the job of presenting a talk explaining the research the scientific team has performed.

• Research your topic at the assigned Internet sites.
• Complete the attached activity.
• Make a list of the important things your group has done/discovered.
• Decide what conclusion your group has come to.
• Now help the person leading the group to decide what he/she is going to say.
• You will use PowerPoint to illustrate your presentation.

OVERVIEW

The instructions below will help you to prepare your project.

·        Choose one person from your group to play the part of the scientist. This person will have the job of presenting a talk (7-10 minutes) explaining what research the group has done. The others will play roles as research assistants, friends or relatives.

·        Read the information that is attached.  Look at geology and earth science books your teacher provides, and read the web pages that are attached to your simulation guide to find out more about your topic.

·        Complete labs or simulations that are attached to this packet.

·        Prepare a presentation about the following:

• The experiments your team performed (Show pictures of equipment you used; explain how you used it)
• The importance of your experiments.(Do your experiments support the idea that continents move?) Prepare a PowerPoint file that explains the.results of your research.
