Johnny Got His Gun, by Dalton Trumbo

One Sentence Synopsis:
A World War I soldier, trapped in his mind as what is left of his body is kept alive by machines, questions all of his previous beliefs about valor, family, country, and war as he struggles to find a way to communicate with the outside world.

   A+  (contributor)

Bleak, tragic, and gripping; the best anti-war novel I have ever read, and a story that still resonates in my thoughts while simultaneously giving me claustrophobic nightmares. I cherish this out-of-print copy and lend it to any friend in search of a meaningful novel that will make you think AND make you feel like your life isn't so bad after all (same reason I re-read The Jungle now and then). One of my highest recommendations.
