Thirukkural in Burmese and Melayu

The Kural was translated into Burmese and Sinhalese during the same period of 1960s. The only Burmese translation known to us is the 1964 translation by U. Myo Thant. In Bahasa Melayu, there are probably four translations: By Ramly Bin Thakir in 1964, Ismail Hussain in 1967, Soosai, and the recent one in 1997 and 1999 under the title: “Thirukkural. Terjemahou, Pengertian dan Pembicaraan (Versi Bahasa Malayu)”, published by Persatuan Hindu Universiti, Malaya University of Malay, Kuala Lumpur.

I haven’t so far managed to get any copy of these translations, though translations in Burmese and Melayu are not uncommon in leading libraries in Tamil Nadu. Till then, here is a translation in Melayu:

“Janganlah bertunggu sedetik ketika bagi
kerja yang memerlukan tindakan segera ...”

Better the pinching poverty of the wise
Than the pile of wealth hoarded by vice.

(Tirukkural: 657)
