INTRODUCTION

This is the seventh newsletter with which the committee hopes to reach every single Bredenkamp. Warmest of greetings and we trust that things are going well.

This year the emphasis falls on our families and for us as Bredenkamps our families are precious, but with it comes great responsibility. No it is more of a privilege namely the fact that we as households and families can live in a culture of love, togetherness and respect for each other. Healthy patriotism and pride as Bredenkamp families which is a marker for who we are. It is such a pleasure living with family values, which was passed down from generation to generation. Have we all not received good life lessons from our grandparents, mother and father, even our older brothers or sisters. Perhaps sometimes from other family?

May all Bredenkamps still value family bonds because it is these bonds which form the strongest anchors in times we live. One of the mercies of our heavenly father is a home in which we can experience love until the ripe age of parenthood even grandparenthood.

Above all, may we still remember: If the Lord does not build a house --- (PS 127)

2. THE AFRIKAANS LANGUAGE: THE FIRST DOCUMENTED REFRENCE

In the book from Herman Giliomee, “The Afrikaner” he refers on pg. 215

“ In 1825 M.D Teenstra published a dialogue between a Caledon farmer, his wife and a slave to show his readers how the Cape vernacular differed from pure Dutch.”

The date refers to a period of about 50 years before S.J du Toit first Afrikaans language movement from 1875 to 1890 and is the first reference to this indigenous born language. Interestingly enough M.D Teenstra described in full report how he came across the farm “de Groote plaats or boerderij van Bredenkamp” approximately one hour in the east from the heat source in Caledon.

On page 122 till 124 he describes in detail the nature of the farming, the building of a new home in Roodebloemskraal, two watermills and the present of a sealskin as well as advice on Teenstra’s health problems.

We can thus conclude from interesting history and witnesses that in 1825 the Bredenkamp family, slaves and maids on Roodebloemskraal Caledon, used a form of Afrikaans.

3.  THE REASON FOR PRESERVING OUR FAMILY GEANOLOGY

N.P van Wyk Louw said: “ Life lives within us: to know ourselves and even to be intelligently humble, we must know every facet, which is present in us.”

This saying surrounds me for the whole meaning with which we are currently busy. As complex beings we must know about our origin and past to have purpose and perspective for the future.

That is the calling and responsibility of each individual and group to preserve their historical and cultural legacy for future generations as a source of inspiration, pride and compassion.

However it must never become an idealistic leash around the neck, rather a strap under the heart and a stronghold for the future.

I personally enjoy:

Ø      The detective work, teamwork, worldwide network of cooperation and idealism

Ø      The meeting of people whom share the same surname across the whole spectrum of life.

Ø      Observing basic characteristic traits, morals, cultural tendencies and view points

Ø      The knowledge that genetic messages however thinned through generations still remains a common factor in each individual’s composition. Transfer of influences and moral behavior patterns is clearly visible across generations.

Ø      To learn from wider history and options which were followed in the past by individuals.

Ø      To find the true nature of circumstances in the past when current judgement of our forefathers behavior and the influence on our present situation.

Ø      To observe the fact that more young people are prepared to carry the torch further in” faith, hope, love”- hold on people!

Unnerving events in the youngest history shows us how weary we must be relentlessly in not lying down and expect others to preserve our legacy.

  1. In the current offering “ Family Stories of South Africa” in the national cultural museum in Pretoria nine families story is depicted by photo’s and articles. Coincidentally the families are those from Pres. M.T Steyn, Dolly Rathebe, Zonkezizwa Mthethwa, Cedric Nunn, Sol Plaaitjies, A.S de Fleur ext. Population composition is maintained percentage wise.
  1. On the 22nd of March I had the pleasure of accompanying Prof. Barry le Roux to Bloukrans Monument near Ladysmith Natal. Yes it is heritage day and we are looking for the terrain of the biggest farm murder in our South African history, because there is no more route markers or signs and the environment is full huts and kraals as well as ground erosion.

The route markers, fences and buildings are stolen with the marble-relief broken. Gert Maritz’s grave and the 1938 wagon trails in cement and the marble pillars are luckily undamaged. The complex is amidst a Zulu settlement and kraals, Afrikaans and English are insufficient, if a person can ever find them.

54 women, 43 men, 198 children and 200 servants were brutally murdered in 1838 and on heritage day 2004 wreaths were laid upon “ Struggle” heroes and Hector Peterson’s grave in Soweto by our foremost political parties.

  1. 6 April 2004 has come and gone, but nowhere was something written, broadcasted or depicted about the landing of a people in the Cape on 1652. A lonely Jan van Riebeeck stares pensive out in front of him at the base of Table Mountain.

Are we just stupid or have we forgotten? Are we jaded or unfeeling? Is factual history being killed away?

We cannot allow the neglect of our family- and cultural history. Let us begin by our selves. Our mustard seed will grow and become a big tree if everyone does their part in “ Faith, Hope, Love “

GATHERINGS AND VISITS

 Ø      Petrusville and Van der Kloof’s Bredenkamp 5th March 2004 – 7th March 2004.

The committee has realized for a long time that Barend Godfried Bredenkamp (b8) family tree is incomplete and that it requires attention.

Gert and I decided to make work of this at the end of 2003, particularly after Nooitgedacht-Marico visit.

In the process I traced Anna Bredenkamp a1b8c2d10e3f1 born on 10.06.1918 in Church Street Petrusville. What a wealth of information and a brain which can calculate family matters as fast as our PC’s.

So we find Anna’s brother Fanie, his five sons and families on Van der Kloof, contact was now established. Gert and Sarie was privileged on their way to the Cape to meet everyone face to face and make arrangements for a committee visit.

Saturday 6 March Gert, Sarie, Jannie, Marthie, Uncle Frikkie, me and Susan was at Van der Kloof and met the family on Lieberwalt their prominent farm near the Orange-river just below the dam wall.

As a group they visited old farms in the surrounding areas including Paardeberg and Beauclaire whilst enjoying the beautiful landscape, taking photographs, visiting the cemetery and talked daylong.

It was a shame however that previous prominent homesteads are no longer in family hands, but we do not know what the future holds. We may dream!

Barend Godfried (b8) farmed on Paardeberg circa 1820 that means it was long before the Groot Trek. His final resting-place has not been found, but there are unmarked graves!

Back at Fanie’s the Bredenkamp-league was strengthened like never before. Braaing meat, chatting, visiting and walks in Ampie’s beautiful bird-garden on the slope of the Orange.

The photos say everything .The bredenkamp family is growing due to Fanie and Joe’s five sons with the little ones flourishing.

Uncle Jannie and his tales will still remain for a while and the other stories of the area is very interesting and colorful as one could imagine.

I am definitely going to try to visit again and keep in touch. The friendly hard working bunch of Bredenkamp’s shall not be forgotten quickly.

The family tree has grown with about five A4 pages due to Anna, Fanie and the wedded sisters. Another piece of our big puzzle is in place. Thank you to everyone who could be there.

Ø      Arunna – 5 March 2004

Gert and Sarie Bredenkamp stopped on their way to a Bredenkamp-leage visit to Petrusville and Van der Kloof at Arunna on the family cemetery where there was more Bredenkamp graves to be found.

After a big search, explanations and help from the locals the farm was reach .The farm Arunna belonged to Andries Petrus Bredenkamp (a1b8c6d4) in the early nineteen hundreds.

Gert’s view as follows – “ with a feeling of nirvana and thankfulness we where privileged to be there and in so doing tracking a piece Bredenkamp history.

Ø      Genealogical Family Tree Program Structures

After the theft of the computers during November 2003 both programs namely Access/Excell and Family Origin was placed back on new computers and all data as far as possible from back-up copies. Lost data was again worked in and is just finished.

All data on Access/Excell was again worked through and replaced with all possible information up to date processed. Access/Excell forms the core program within which information can be compared and searched.

Any duplicates or mistakes were corrected, but spelling and date faults still appear.

There are currently 2 523 family members traced on Access from which 1 814 members successfully compares with Family Origin.

A total of 3 285 family members was found on Family Origin, but includes 703 children whom are not Bredenkamps.

Out of Access there was a further 44 family members identified whom can be placed Family Origin and a further 27 members which can now be fully modified.

Also a further 709 Bredenkamps was discovered in Access which was not in previous reports and they cannot be placed in Family Origin. There should be decided were to place these members – A task worthy for the committee.

Out of the previous it is clear that a lot of information must be processed first before a reliable report of data can be brought up to date and printed.

All data can now for the first time be worked upon simultaneously from more than one PC. All information will be processed in the next few weeks and a joint working sessions is planned by the end of May 2004 to process the current information as far as possible, after which a decision must be made what to do with a family member who’s details we have, but don’t know where he/she fits in the family tree.

We are trying to get the newest voting lists just for the Bredenkamps to give us a further nudge in the process of information and the league.

If necessary quizzes will be posted to family members in order to gain the information.

Everything included the first information cold be available in June 2004 for national use and a realistic date can be set for 1 October 2004 for the first data-base.

Wynand Bredenkamp

(Thank you to Wynand and Ju-Ann whom have taken a big task upon themselves and already done so much precious work: Pieter Bredenkamp)

Ø      Congratulations to our Bredenkamps and descendents

Bredenkamps in the spotlight

 Mount Everest

Andre Bredenkamp is one of the three South Africans who gained permits to climb Mount Everest for 2004. They constructed base camp amongst the clouds to climatise. From 15- 30 May 2004 they will start to climb the northern face of the mountain, but depends on the weather. Andre was appointed Chief Scout Commissioner.

The following is an extract from EverestNews.Com:

EverestNews.com" Summit Climb Everest 2004 Dispatch 10 5/21/2004: Dear EverestNews.com.  Thanks for all of the great work you are doing in telling the story of climbing Everest. I Here are the dates, names, and local origins of the summiters in our two succesful SummitClimb.com teams (so far, as we plan to continue trying): 18 May, 2004: Thomas Haines, Colorado, USA. Ryan Waters, Georgia, USA. Franck Pitula, Lyon, France. John Mislow, Chicago, USA. Lakpa Temba Sherpa, Kulima, Nepal. Nurbu Tsipe, Tashi Tsom, Tibet Dorje Kasang, Old Tingri, Tibet 20 May, 2004 Andre Bredenkamp, Capetown, South Africa. Lakpa Chiri Sherpa, Kulima, Nepal.

The last few days have been filled with many challenges and achievements. After a number of days of patient waiting at 6400m, a group of us made an all-out summit sprint to take advantage of a brief weather window. The team departed at 0130h on May 18 brisk winds, pitch black, and nothing but our headlamps to guide our way up from 8300m to the Yellow Band. Daniel Mazur stayed in the high camp to help the team on their way and coordinate the crucial Tibetan part of the team. After negotiating the slick limestone of the Yellow Band, we gained the summit ridge after the first step. The Ridge is very exposed with cornices dropping off 3000m to the left and 2000m on the right. Not a good time to slip, and especially challenging since we were wearing crampons (skittering across icy limestone in utter darkness is a very sobering experience).

Onward we pushed, up to the mildly technical but quickly overcome second step. After picking our lines carefully, we were standing on the top of the second step and trotting quickly towards the third step. A few hours later we (John, Lakpa Temba Sherpa, Frank, Ryan, Thomas) were standing on top of the highest peak in the world; great views, exhaustion, and elation. Nurbu Tsipe and Dorje Kasang followed a few hours later. A quick stay at the top and we were ready to descend. As we downclimbed the summit pyramid dihedral, we ran into a number of climbers that were still making their way up to the summit. We found out later that these climbers were members of the unfortunate Korean team that tragically lost two of their members that day. Our deepest sympathies go out to the fallen climbers' loved ones. Soon after we descended to safety at the North Col and ABC we were informed of another loss; a Japanese climber. It is a sobering reminder of how ruthless the mountain can be. The second wave of climbers was not as fortunate with the weather as the first - gale force winds, whiteout conditions, subzero temperatures, and hostile surface conditions conspired to make further attempts highly difficult and hazardous.

However, despite fierce weather, our Andre Bredenkamp from South Africa became the first South African male to summit from the North Face. Braving untoward conditions with the help of Lakpa Chiri Sherpa, Andre has made it into the record books - and is currently making his way down to ABC safely. Hats off to you! The final summit assault teams are planning on making their attack at the earliest sign of fair weather, perhaps in the next day' or two. Oxygen and other essentials are moving into place and we send our very best wishes for a safe successful summit bid. Thank You Very Much, Cheers, Yours Sincerely, from John Mislow, Thomas Haines, Duane Morrison, and all of us at SummitClimb.com "

Cape Town adventurers Chris Drummond, Mike Nixon and Andre Bredenkamp, who attempted to climb Mount Everest. (Simone Scholtz, Die Burger)

Capetonian André Bredenkamp helped cover an injured climber with snow near the summit of Mount Everest where he and fellow climbers had to leave the man to die. Bredenkamp, who arrived back in the city on Wednesday, said on the same day that he summited, three climbers died in their attempt to scale the world's highest mountain of 8 848m.

"One of them, a Korean, fell and broke his leg. No one was able to move him or do anything. We covered him up with snow and he just went to sleep," he said on Wednesday. It was one of Bredenkamp's more harrowing experiences on his successful climb of the north face of Everest from Tibet last month.

"It's difficult to try to help anyone at that altitude because you're just trying to keep yourself alive." He summited in almost a complete white-out of driven snow. "You're just trying to survive, trying to balance and concentrate on getting to the top. I just wanted to sleep and for 10 or 15 minutes I lay down in the snow and slept until the Sherpa woke me up. It was a very bad season. Nine people died on the north face," Bredenkamp said.

"You get completely disorientated. I had to keep reminding myself I was climbing a mountain. Every step of the way I had to try to motivate myself. At that altitude I took at least 10 to 15 breaths each time I moved one foot."

When he reached the top, he had unfurled the South African flag and the Boy Scout flag, an organisation to which he has belonged since he was a boy. Fellow Capetonians, Mike Nixon and Chris Drummond, did not reach the summit. Nixon developed a serious lung infection and was forced to turn back at 7 500m - higher than any mountain in the southern hemisphere.

Bredenkamp and Drummond pushed on to the top camp. "Those three days were hell. You'd wake up with your sleeping bag covered in snow and ice and icicles stuck to your face.

"Then you'd pack up your wet sleeping bag and have tea and porridge and walk all day."It took 45 minutes to climb 100m. It was absolutely awful."

"When we arrived at top camp we had to collect ice in a black bag and melt it in a cup on the stove. We spent several hours just melting ice to make soup and tea."The two set out for the summit at midnight wearing torches on their heads.

Said Drummond: "It was a lot more difficult than I anticipated and we came close to death on more than one occasion."n summit ridge there was a huge gust of wind and I took off backwards like Mary Poppins. I hit a rock."

"I fell about 13m and landed on my backpack, which probably saved my life. By that stage I lost my nerve. It would take another seven hours to do the last 200m and I knew I couldn't make it."

Drummond is still in pain from severe frostbite on his toes.

Nixon, back at advanced base camp, spoke of the harrowing time they had watching the weather closing in over the summit.

Nixon said: "We were surrounded by groups from Bulgaria and Korea. The Bulgarians lost one guy and the Koreans lost two. So when we heard André had made the summit there were huge celebrations."

HOW THEY EXPERIENCED IT

Ø      We would like to say a special thanks to Hennie. Gert and their wives, Jannie, Martie en Uncle Frikkie for their visit to Liberwalt Saturday 6 March 2004.

Except for the interesting information, it was valuable experience for us. With a big search and all your research you made us part of this and is sincerely appreciated.

May the Lord bless you for your valuable contribution to the Bredenkamp Cultural History.

A big Bredenkamp greeting. Liberwalt Van der Kloof dam. Liza Bredenkamp.

Ø      5 April 2002. I am so glad that we met. How are things there? We had lovely rain last Tuesday. I just want to say thank you for all your trouble, time which you have invested in the family tree. So many have tried, but then it stopped again. And again thank you for all that you are doing for the family. My best wishes and success. Anna Bredenkamp. Petrusville

Ø      Hello,

Thank you for your messages and the link to the Bredenkamp (South Africa) website. I am originally from South Africa and my family. Still resides there. You may want to contact them because some of the names on your website seem familiar and interconnected. My father does speak Afrikaans, so there would be no difficulty in talking to him.

The interesting parts are as follows. My Father is James Milne Bredenkamp Same names as (a1b3c2d2e1f4) on the abbreviated family tree. If this is of use to you, please let me know. Additionally, if you have more information than this (which I could not find on your website, I would appreciate it if you could send it to me.

My grandfather, Michael Bredenkamp. had 6 children - two Boys, James Milne and Wessels, as well as 4 daughters. Lenie, Nellie, Stella and Carine. All in the extended family is now more than 72 people and they gather every two years somewhere in South Africa.

I have another question. It seems you have designed a heraldic emblem for the Bredenkamp family. Is it only applicable to those Bredenkamps of Afrikaans descent? if not, might it not be prudent to write the motto in either German (root language) or Latin so that it is universally applicable to all Bredenkamps worldwide? Regards, Mike Bredenkamp

Ø      Interest surname: Roets. Congratulations with the nice site. It is good reading and good to find people who share the same surname, yet very interesting. Jopeph Cosyn. Belgium.

Ø      I am currently in England and finding the web page very interesting and would like to know more when I return to South Africa. Martin Bredenkamp.

Ø      Nice website. I am actually looking for Coetzees. Our forefathers have cared for a big number of descendents. Where does the first Coetzees come from? Help. Sybrand Coetzee.

Ø      Thank you for all the effort. Sarel Bredenkamp.

 LET US KNOW PLEASE!

Tell us about your family details so that we can substitute the family tree and keep up to date to the youngest arrivals.

We are also looking for someone to translate the newsletter from Afrikaans to English and German.

You can contact Marthie Bredenkamp on E-mail [email protected]  P.O Box Knysna avenue 282, Sinoville Pretoria, 0182. Tel/Fax (012 543 0860)

All donations, however small are welcome and it is these donations that keep the league financially healthy. The committee has expenses which are draining the current funds, For example research, the printing and distribution of the newsletter and for the project Protection actions for cemeteries. The account details are as follows; “Bredenkamp familiebond”, ABSA bank, Branch Sunnyside Active Savings Plan, Account no. 90-7187-3122.

To accomplish all of this we need the help of every Bredenkamp. The more members we have the easier it becomes to fulfill our commitments. We wanted member ship to be free, but in the expensive times we live it are not possible. Just the admin of the league – letters, stamps, envelopes, and the newsletter ext. requires big amounts of cash.

MEMBERSHIP INVITATION LETTER

EVERYBODY ARE WELCOME TO JION THE BREDENKAMP LEAGUE. The league is for BREDENKAMPS – here and now and well into the future.

Because we are very proud of our familybonds and our league’s achievements and would like you as a member, we would like to share what we have done so far.

The Bredenkamp Family Register and Family History are already far in its advanced stages. It begins with JOHANNES CHRISTOFFEL BREDENKAMP whom arrived in the Cape on the 24th September 1763 and is the forefather of all the Bredenkamps in South Africa and outside our borders. All Bredenkamp’ s information is required and help is needed to complete our book as far as possible.

A Bredenkamp Family League Emblem was designed and is already registered at the state herald for everybody who joined the league.

Reunion and gatherings are held freaquently like those by Pretoria (ORYX EKO PARK), POSTMASBURG, CLARENS, MEYERSDAL in ALBERTON and KAMEELDRIFT 3313 JR in Pretoria. Each gathering was a huge success with people meeting each other for the first time.

NEWSLETTERS are given out with interesting information and newsworthy articles, which includes gatherings.

The Bredenkamp Website was designed and is kept in good order so that important information can be received, but also for notifications and invitations to gatherings to be advertised.

The newest is a leather hat with the emblem and is sold at cost price. The hat can be ordered from Marthie Bredenkamp on 012 543 0860.

3. In spite of what we have achieved thus far, we still have ideals and goals which the most important

are to complete the information in the family tree and get to know each other better.

 4. With the joining of the league you will receive membership certificate with the emblem in full color and other relevant documents.

A willing co-worker is asked to help the committee with the organizing of gatherings in your area as well the receiving and distribution of information.

We need you to accomplish all this and of course your membership with which you give vital support.

Please complete the accompanying form and post fax or E-mail it.
