New York Nut Growers meet May 6, 2006 at the BWW Farm of John Wertis and Marian Prichard, 8144 Searsburg Rd., Trumansburg, NY.

 

Trumansburg, NY (NYNGA)  People interested in growing nuts are invited to the spring meeting of the New York Nut Growers Association May 6, 2006 at the BWW Farm of John Wertis and Marian Prichard, 8144 Searsburg Rd., Trumansburg, NY.  Take Route 96 to Trumansburg, then Rte 277 south west for one village block (sign here directs us toward the Finger Lakes National Forest), go west on Searsburg Road exactly one mile.  The restored historic barn of the BWW Farm is on the left (before the county line marker, Tompkins/Schuyler County).  Farming Boer goats is the main operation of the farm, but this meeting is mainly a hands-on meeting on planning, planting, and grafting of Hardy English Walnut, the current NYNGA Project. 

9:00-9:30 – Arrival, chat, snacks (Coffee, tea, bagels, buns, and nutty stuff).  9:30-9:45 – NYNGA brief business meeting.  9:45-10.45 – farm tour by hay wagon, evaluation of Native Butternut trees, and review of the Hardy English Walnut Project and planting sites on the farm.  10:45-11.45 – short drive to the Village of Trumansburg Village Hall for “bathroom break”, and “short-talks” on Hazelnuts and the Badgersett breeding programs.  11:45-12:45 – walk across street, and lunch at the Simply Red Bistro.  12:45-3:30 – organization of “planting teams” and planting of Hardy English Walnut Project seedlings at BWW Farm.  Grafting demonstration of walnut.

 

Drop-ins are invited free, except lunch should be bought or arranged.

 

NYNGA members should register ahead for $15, which includes lunch.

 

Visitors who drop in, and buy a membership for $20 receive a free gift:  “Nut Growing Ontario Style” $12 book, 174 pages, illustrated with line drawings.

The New York Nut Growers Association formed after the 2001 meeting of the Northern Nut Growers Association to better explore local NY nuts.  NY conditions require unique growing and varieties of hazel (filbert), walnut (& butternut), heartnut, chestnut, hickory, pecan, pawpaw and persimmon.
