New York Nut Growers meet on April 23, 2005 at the NYS DEC Tree Nursery, Saratoga Springs, NY.
Buffalo, NY (NYNGA), April 15,2005--- People interested in growing nuts and hardy fruits are invited to the spring meeting of the New York Nut Growers Association on April 23, 2005 at the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Tree Nursery, 2369 Route 50, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. This is where Route 50 changes from 2 to 4 lanes, 4 miles northerly from the intersection or Route 50 and Route 67 at Ballston Spa, NY. Growing the hardiest English walnuts will be the main topic. 9:00 AM Registration and light breakfast. 9:30 NYNGA initial business with introductions and grower samplings. 10:30 Lee Reich, a noted author of several books on fruits and nuts, will give a presentation entitled “Tree Planting Myths” on the correct way to plant nut and fruit trees. (Meeting’s schedule is changeable for the best weather to tour.) Hardy English walnut program discussed. 12:00 Lunch 1:00 Update the history and tour the NYS DEC Tree Nursery, Frank Munzer talk and slides on NY American Chestnut Foundation project. Grower questions are asked and answered. 3:00-3:45 NYNGA Board meeting...Make up more seed packets.
The nursery offers tree and shrub seedlings, including black walnut and butternut for conservation plantings on public and private lands. Visitors are welcome to drop in, and if they buy membership for $20, will get a free book: “Nut Growing Ontario Style”, 174 pages, illustrated with line drawings, and if they register ahead, walnut packet is free.

The New York Nut Growers Association formed after the 2001 meeting of the Northern Nut Growers Association to better explore local NY nuts. NY conditions require unique growing and varieties of hazel (filbert), walnut (& butternut), heartnut, chestnut, hickory, pecan, pawpaw and persimmon.
