New York Nut Growers meet at the home and orchard of Tom Potts, 26 Willets Ave, Belmont, NY.

 

Belmont, NY (NYNGA) People interested in growing nuts and hardy fruits are invited to the fall meeting of the New York Nut Growers Association October 15, 2005 at the home and orchard of Tom Potts, 26 Willets Ave (which is Rte. 19, and the eighth house on the right as you head south past the village limit sign), Belmont, NY.  Growing nuts and hardy fruits in USDA Hardiness Zone 4/5 will be the main topic.  8:45 – 9:30 Registration, and goodies are sampled.  9:30 – 10:30 Tom Molnar (soon to be Rutgers doctoral graduate), just back from Europe, will talk on “The Collection of Hazelnuts and Persian Walnuts in the former Soviet Union, and an Update on his Eastern Filbert Blight Research”.  10:30 – 11:45 Tom Potts will give a tour of his orchard and strategies.  12:00 – 1:00 Buffet style lunch enjoyed ($15/ea, those registering for full meeting).  1:00 – 1:30 Brief business meeting is open to all. 1:30 – 3:00 Woodlot tour and talk given on “Woodlot Management by Charlie Mowatt from the New York Forest Owners Association. 

 

Drop-ins are invited free, except 12:00 p.m. lunch should be brought, or arranged.

 

NYNGA members should register ahead for $15.00, which includes lunch.

 

Visitors who drop in, and buy membership for $20, will get a free gift:  “Nut Growing Ontario Style”  $12 book, 174 pages, illustrated with line drawings.

The New York Nut Growers Association formed after the 2001 meeting of the Northern Nut Growers Association to better explore local NY nuts.  NY conditions require unique growing and varieties of hazel (filbert), walnut (& butternut), heartnut, chestnut, hickory, pecan, pawpaw and persimmon.
