Stephanie
rolled over in bed and sighed into the pillow. Today was the day. The day of
the ball, and as much as Stephanie loved to get dressed up, she wasn’t
particularly looking forward to it tonight. Still, yesterday she had splurged,
buying herself a $200 plus dress with matching shoes, make up and jewellery. In
total her shopping bill had come in at just under $400. She’d have to starve for
a few weeks, her mother still wasn’t feeding her. Well, she wasn’t feeding her
without a great deal of ‘why me’ing and ‘new job’ing. And Stephanie, quite
frankly couldn’t stand another minute of it.
Stephanie
had the $400 shopping bill to impress but no one to impress.
She
and Joe hadn’t talked to one an other for approximately 2 months. And though she
had been having… an affair, with Ranger, he had upped and disappeared a week
ago. He hadn’t said anything, other than that he’d call when he returned. He
hadn’t called. Not that Stephanie had been expecting Ranger to actually take her
to the ball, or even show up there. Ranger wasn’t the most sociable guy she
knew. He was more the most unsociable guy she knew. Still living in hope
up until a week ago she had turned down 3 invites from various others to go with
them.
Luckily
for Stephanie, her cousin Shirley had come down with the flu and Stephanie now
had a date with her other best friend Eddie. What was even luckier was that she
knew Carol Kenmare from high school. Carol had arranged the table to Stephanie’s
liking. She was seated with Eddie, Carl, Big dog, Joe Juniak, Brian Simon’s and
their partners. The only real changes Carol had made were to swap Stephanie’s
name with Shirley’s, but what Stephanie didn’t know, wasn’t going to hurt her.
And Carol had gotten a bit more information on the sexual prowess of Joe Morelli
for her hassles.
Stephanie
struggled with the covers on her bed until she flopped onto the floor on one
side untangled from the sheets. It was 10.13am and she had an appointment with
Lula at Lula’s hairdresser for 1pm. Stephanie had a quick breakfast of toast and
coffee. She took her time in the shower, shaving all the bits that needed
shaving and some that didn’t, she washed with dolce vita shower wash and dressed
dabbing on some of her dolce vita perfume. Just before she left her apartment at
122.40pm Stephanie stuffed a pop tart in the toaster, grabbing it on the way out
for lunch on the run.
Missy,
from Lula’s salon, Jeanie’s was going to wash, dye and set Stephanie’s
hair for the night. Lula had over come her fears of cops to the point that she
would be around them. She hadn’t yet cured her fear of the actual station, but
she was still going with Bunchy to the ball. Something about a deal made and
Bunchy calling in a marker. Stephanie didn’t want to know, so she didn’t ask. To
her it sounded too familiar.
Mr Alexander had been booked
out for a few weeks so Stephanie had nowhere else to go and had latched onto
Lula’s offer to take her to see Missy. Missy was a ‘hair artist extraordinaire’
according to Lula, and Stephanie agreed she just hopped Missy could tone down
the artistic side long enough to do something Stephanie could live with for the
night. She pulled up to Lula’s and locked up the Buick. They both proceeded on
foot to Jeanie’s.

An
hour later, Stephanie’s hair was washed, and the dye was working its magic as a
Korean lady worked wonders doing Stephanie’s manicure and pedicure. Stephanie
was close to sleep half an hour after sitting in the chair when Lula sat next to
her and started to ask questions.
“So
tell me why’s it that you’re not at me and Bunchy’s table no more?” Lula had
obstinacy written all over her. She wasn’t going to let up until she got an
answer.
“I’m
going with Eddie. I told you this already.” Stephanie’s voice was tired and
filled with annoyance.
“Don’t
see why you aren’t dragging that other man of yours with you.” Lula said digging
for clues.
Stephanie
sighed. “I don’t know where he is, and even if he were here, he wouldn’t go
anyways. You were at the office Christmas party and how long did he turn up for?
Five minutes, ten max?”
Lula
snorted. “And how long was it until you left after he did? Five minutes? Ten
max?”
“I
didn’t leave with him or because of him. We’ve discussed this before
too.”
“Hunh.”
Lula looked ready to go into rhino mood, but Stephanie’s nails were done and it
was time to finish her hair.
Stephanie
followed Missy to a bathing chair and relaxed again, thinking about nothing in
particular as Missy washed the dye out of her hair.
An
hour later, Lula with her hair a dark brown with golden brown highlights walked
with a straight haired slightly lighter, but similarly coloured Stephanie back
to her apartment. They sat on the street steps for a minute
talking.
“So
you’re gonna be there right? Not gonna ditch on the last minute
right?”
Stephanie
thought Lula was sounding particularly concerned about her whereabouts. “I’ll be
there. Why are you so worried?”
“Me,
worried? Not so much worried as kinda concerned about stuff. The mayors gonna be
there. So will a whole bunch other people. The state senator and the rest of
those guys. I ain’t ever been in company like that before. Dunno for sure what
fork and stuff. Besides, don’t want no one thinking I’m just a ho looking for a
ride to legitimacy with a fucking fed boyfriend.” Lula looked off into the
distance.
“Ok,
heres the best I can do for you. Work your way from the outside in with your
cutlery. And if you get lost, follow the others lead. They’re every day people,
cops for the most part. You’re not gonna have to sit with any of the government
guys. And I’m going to be right behind you. I’ll have your back and you’ve got
mine. Like always. Capeice?”
“Yeah
babe. You got my back and I’ve got yours.”
With
that Lula went into her apartment and Stephanie unlocked the Buick. Cranked the
heater and went home.

Stephanie
pulled into the lot at close to 5pm after stopping to pick up a sub from Pino’s
to scoff down. Stephanie knew her stomach, and though she could wait for dinner
at 7pm, it would be more comfortable if she didn’t have to. At 5.55pm Stephanie
carefully pinned up her hair and emersed herself in water, standing to wash
herself before submersing herself again to wash off the dolce vita body wash.
She quickly shaved all the little bits that she inevitably missed the first go
round and jumped out to dry herself off.
She
put on some more dolce vita perfume and wrapped herself in a towel as she put on
her makeup. She went sparingly, thanking God that she had a clear complexion and
no major breakouts had happened recently. She finished with a dash of gold
tinged pink lipstick that was the same colour of her shoes and nails, matching
her gold dress that had the lightest shade of pink to it. At just on 10 minutes
to 6pm she slipped the towel off and climbed into the short form fitting dress.
Matching gold thong underwear went along way to not giving her a VPL or visible
panty line. High spiky 4-inch gold fuck me pumps gave Stephanie the finishing
touch to her well-planned outfit.
Now,
if she only had someone here that she wanted to work her magic on, all would be
great.
Eddie
called up from the parking lot at 6.05pm and Stephanie finished stuffing
tonight’s necessary equipment into her clutch purse, before pulling on a long
sheepskin coat that Mary Lou had gotten for Christmas and had leant her, locking
the door behind her. She took the elevator not willing to take the chance of
breaking a leg on the way down. She was dressed to impress, and though she
though the paramedics who came to fix her leg would be appreciative, she thought
a bunch of friends and other men might appreciate it just that little bit more.

Stephanie
climbed into Eddie’s station wagon not bothering to cover her legs with the coat
or with yanking the dress that had ridden up down. Eddie was a life long friend
and for some crazy reason that she couldn’t fathom he was deeply and madly I
love with her cousin Shirley the whiner.
“Looking
hot Steph. Who are you all dressed up for?” Eddie was teasing and Stephanie knew
it. But for some reason she was now in a great mood. She hurled her response
back at him.
“Carl.”
“Carl?”
Eddies voice was incredulous. “You wouldn’t go out with him on a dare! What the
hells the matter with you?”
“Well
you know, look at the last two guys in my life. They both disappeared with out a
word. I need someone who’s just a bit more stable. And if Carl’s anything, it’s
stable.”
Eddie
burst out laughing, sliding the car on an icy patch of road. He brought himself
and the car under control. “See, now I know you’re playin’ cause if you actually
got yourself a halfway stable guy you’d go insane with boredom before a month
was out.”
“You’re
sure about that are you?” Stephanie raised a brow at
Eddie.
“Uh
huh. I know you Steph. You love your life just as it is, as fucked up as it is
at times.” Stephanie shrugged, he was right.
“So
just what hot guys are gonna be there for me to pick up
then?”
“The
majority of your boyfriends payroll for one. As I understand it, none of them
are married.” Stephanie’s only thought was ‘shit’. “Then there’s a few of the
three letter agents around. But you’re smarter than that.”
Eddie
through a quick frown her way as if he could impress upon her that she
should be smarter than that.
Stephanie
tapped her head. “No grass growing here.” Eddie gave her a small smile and
pulled into the parking lot of the City Hall.
They
got out and met behind the wagon. Eddie held out an arm and Stephanie linked
hers though it. “The ball awaits you milady.” And they set off to the
entryway.
