Background

NUS Lion Dance was founded in 1985 and officially joined the NUS Centre for the Arts (CFA) family in 2004. The group was formed by NUS undergraduates and alumni who shared a mutual love and passion for Chinese lion dancing. Within a year, the troupe has grown to become one of Singapore’s more renowned dance troupes, making numerous special appearances not only during the Lunar New Year festive season but throughout the year in and out of campus.

Mission

The group aims to promote Lion Dance as a cultural form to NUS community at the same time raising awareness from within campus towards nationwide. As a group in National University of Singapore, NUS Lion Dance is also a leading example for all Lion Dance institutional troupes in Singapore.

Objectives

Short-term

-          To improve individual / group performing standards and techniques

-          To attract more active members

-          To perform for more international organizations and occasions besides Chinese New Year

Long Term

-          To gain achievements and credibility so as to be able to provide a full-range of professional equipment

-          To participate in both local and overseas competitions to raise profile of group

-          To become the top lion dance institutional troupe in Singapore

Future Plans

The group hopes to represent NUS and Singapore to enter the International National Lion Dance Competition in the coming years. With more competition experiences, the group aims to organize a National Lion Dance Competition for all educational institutions to encourage more schools to participate in this healthy art.
