Driven on BS1202

BS Day Production 2002 – “Please take me there, driver”

“To propagate the Dharma through Drama” is the fundamental objective of the NUSBS Culture Team.  Culture is revolving with the emergence of self-composed songs and original plays, all of which contain a fair capacity of Buddhistic elements, to mark the significant difference between the society’s culture and the mainstream culture outside the society.  Apart from injecting Buddhist teachings into our Cultural activities, the Team also hopes to unearth and build up the laughter, artistic creativity, warmth and spirit of fellowship amongst members.

Why “take me there, driver”?

As an unintentional sequel to “True Dreams” in BS Day Production 2001, “Please take me there, driver” will feature an evening of enlightenment for the passengers of taxi driver, Tan Hwee Kwang (played by Yvonne Tan).  For audience who has witnessed the success of the society’s first production, Kwang (meaning light) was an ambitious and arrogant student aspiring to be a pilot. However, for the past one year, the September 11 incident and the economic recession have affected her progress in weaving the path.  The upcoming play will explore the reasons and repercussions of these obstacles to Kwang’s outlook in life, and how she, as a driver, transforms her knowledge of Buddhism into useful prescriptions to her passengers’ plight. As such, the passengers will enter this ordinary cab, of vehicle number BS1202, to meet this extraordinary driver, and each of them will need Kwang, as a lamp of wisdom, to “take me there” which literally translates to driving him/her onto the correct road and to the right path in life.

Which road do you prefer?

The intertwined connection of the 4 characters will bring out the many serious issues in life, such as prestige and expectations versus self-respect, money and career versus spirituality in life, responsibility in marriage and family ties. Likened a dharma talk, the play will provide some insights of Buddhist views as well as the characters’ perspectives (and hence their wrong behaviour) in lying, prejudice, betrayal and homosexuality. The play will also plant occasional comical relief and corny punch lines, as the driver takes you, the audience, through the multiple crossroads, highway and damaged paths in your life.

Driving on BS1202- reaching the destination on BS Day

The Culture Team aims to drive the thought-provoking messages in the play to all the members. Therefore in conjunction with the theme of the production, BS Day will be heavily publicized with a series of boldly designed posters (by the equally bold Marketing Director, Lewis), which depict the meaningful intention of the play. With the theme “Driven”, the BS Day Project Director, Hadi, hopes that members will also be driven to learn the teachings of the Buddha, rejoice in the warmth of the society’s fellowship and to initiate their contributions to the society’s continuing growth.

On the other hand, the cast and people in the Cultural Production Team sincerely hope to achieve an appreciation and strong support of their effort from the society in their attempts in staging another cultural revolution.  We await the day for a resounding applause to the organizers and performers of BS Day.
