OBJECTIVE
To design and build an aesthetically pleasing, light-weight, ice-cream stick bridge that will carry the largest load at prescribed locations.
MATERIALS And TOOLS
400 ice-cream sticks, 3 tubes of super glue, 1 roll of cotton string, 1 strip of vanguard sheet for the roadway, 1 pen knife, 1 hammer.

CONSTRAINTS

The bridge is to be made from only the given materials and tools on 1st March 2002 in rooms E1-08-01/02.

The bridge must be able to span 600mm and have a minimum width of 45mm (but less than 70mm) and whose roadway surface must be "smooth".

The bridge must allow for the loading mechanism (shown in Figure) to be placed without hindrance. Two G-clamps will be supplied to hold the ends of the bridge to the supports.

DESCRIPTION Of LOADING And SUPPORTING STRUCTURE
The loading mechanism is shown in the Figure. Two steel columns of height 1m and spaced 600mm apart will form the two supports.

WHO Can PARTICIPATE?
Year 1 engineering students with each team consisting of either three or four students.
ENTRY FORMS
Entry forms can be obtained from the Civil Engineering Department Office (E1A-07-03). The deadline for submission to the CE Department office is 26th February 2002.

JUDGING CRITERIA

Maximum load to weight ratio (70%) and appearance of bridge (30%).

Maximum load is defined as the load at which the bridge snaps or when the loading mechanism displaces vertically by 30mm.

Evaluation and selection of the bridges will be carried out on 1st March 2002, 3.00 pm by the judges.

Testing of bridges selected by the judges will be carried out on 6th March 2002 at Engineering Auditorium.

PRIZES To Be WON!!
1st prize - $300
2nd prize - $200
3rd prize - $100
2 merit prizes of $50 each will also be given.

Certificates will be awarded to the winners and all other participating teams.
