Early or Latent Phase of Labor

Women need support even during the early stages of their labor. Despite having little cervical dilitation and contractions that may be far apart, the woman may be experiencing acute discomfort and may be ahving doubts about her ability to cope when labor intesifies.

Forms of support that can be helpful during early labor or latent phase of labor include:

--Providing information

--Distraction

--Comforting touch

--Companionship

--Assiting her to an upright/ambulatory position

--Reassurance

Relaxation techniques may also be useful at this time, such
as, deep breathing, again distraction through light conversation, listening to
music or watching television or a movie all can help pass the time andhelp to decrease pain awareness.
Comforting touch can be offered via massage, cool cloths and hand holding.
Reassurance can be as simple and as important as telling her she is relaxing well between contractions.
