The prevalence of ambulatory surgery and the patient's right to adequate pain management mandates that perianthesthesia nurses become knowledgeable about the experience of pain, clinical practice guidelines, barriers to pain management, and the use of balanced analgesia.The ideal drug may take some time to develop. Until such a time,it is the perianesthesia nurse'sresponsibility to provide optimal pain control with minimal side effects.Pain assessment must be conducted on a periodic basis by using the patient's pain goal to measure the effectiveness of interventions. Discharge instructions must prepare the patient for competent self-care in the home environment.
