What Causes Mad Cow Disease?

-Although the exact cause of Mad Cow Disease is unknown it is associated with the presence of an abnormal protein called a prion.

is a single molecule containing about 250 amino acids


is an abnormal variant of proteins that occur naturally in cells


is capable of causing normal proteins to change into abnormal forms by binding to them, bending them out of shape, forming spongy masses, and eventually leading to death. (How these masses cause neurologic disease is unknown) (McKnight, 2002)
