Aids Crisis in China



Almost 200 years ago, Napoleon predicted that when China awoke, the world would tremble. Two hundred years later, the fear is that when AIDS awakens in China,China itself will tremble, and with it the whole of humanity.(Unitied Nations, 1998)

Basic Information on China

It's the third largest country in the world

It has the largest population in the world

contains more than 1/5 of the world’s population

Population in 2000 was estimated to be over 1.2 billion

The worlds largest remaining communist organization

Multi-religious country - Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Catholicism and Protestantism

Family values emphasize family happiness and marriage for the good of the household

Shared values, shared traditions, shared ways of perceiving, and understanding the world

All forms of media are controlled by the government (I.e. newspapers, t.v., books, internet, ect). ‘Media police’


What is the Crisis?




United Nations predicts that by 2010, 10 million or more people will have HIV or AIDS

HIV/AIDS was first reported in 1985

The HIV prevalence rates ranged from 1% to 80% in the provinces of Yunnan, Xinjiang, Guangxi, and Sichuan

The Chinese Government did not admit to it's AIDS crisis until August 2001 - under pressure from the United Nations
