Hegemony behind the government regulation and consumer health: How nurses should lobby for the right to have safe and ethical meat/meat products
|
From the other links on this web-site one can obviously see that there is a hidden hegemony behind the government controlling the legislation of meat and meat products. The meat consumer should weigh out the cost-benefit of their health when consuming animal and animal products. I am by no means advocating that vegetarianism is the way to go, rather I am advocating that consumers use their judgement when choosing to buy meat to consume in their meals. In nursing, we are taught various ethical theories. One that sits on my mind is John Stuart Mills, Utilitarianism theory that we as nurses need to advocate and assist consumers to shop smart. This theory, highlights the meaning of the golden rule: do unto others as you would have them do unto you (Random House et al., as cited by Burkhardt and Nathaniel, 2002). The greatest good for the greatest amount of people, isnt this a way of life that most of us can relate to? While skimming through the rest of this web-site, you will inform yourself on the facts of mad cow disease or BSE, antibiotic use in animals, and the ethical reason for going vegetarian.

The facts on Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE):

Currently the US is only testing 1 in 18,000 cattle being slaughtered- that is only 50 cattle a week. Compared to other countries, Switzerland tests 1 in 60 cattle, France tests 36,000 cattle a week, Germany tests 20,000 cattle a week (Schlosser, E., 2002). There are no specific numbers of cattle that Canada tests, but apparently the Canadian Food Inspection Agency the C.F.I.A., states (2001) that we test hundreds of cattle for BSE each year and that we have tested over 4,800 cattle in total since its BSE surveillance program was started. According to the C.F.I.A., this level of testing exceeds international recommendations(2001). Currently Canada has strict laws that impose the importation of animal by-products that come from countries that have documented cases of BSE.
