Chapter 8
The ship
HENRIETTA…………….Captain
Speedy is arrested……….
Fog put
the ship on
fire……………………….
Paspartu was
shocked. Again, Fog
is going to
loose all, and
again it is
because of him !
But fog,
as usual, remained
cool. He checked
in the harbor
about other ships,
but there was
no ship going
to England.
He had
exactly 9 days
and 13 hours to
get to London
on time.
Fog took
them all to
a nice hotel
and said :
"Tomorrow we
will find what
we can do."
The next
morning he told
them all to
wait in the hotel. He
went alone to
New-York harbor. There
he saw a
nice small ship
that looked suitable
for a trip
across the Atlantic-Ocean.
--"will
you take
four passengers to

Speedy was his
name, answered :
--"I go
to
--"Well," said
Fog, "Will you
take just four
passengers to France ?"
--"No, even
if you pay me 200
Dollars !"
--"I will
pay you 2000 !"
said Fog
--"Each
?" asked Speedy
--"Yes, each !
8000 for four
passengers !" Said Fog
This was
a great deal
for Speedy. He
agreed, and short
time later Fog,
Auda, Paspartu and
Fix were on
the ship HENRIETTA
on their way
east.
He next
morning one could
see a tall
man standing on the
bridge,
giving directions
to the sailors.
Was it
captain Speedy ? NO ! This
was Fog himself.
And Speedy ?
He was arrested
and locked in
one on the
ship's cabins !
What happened
was very simple.
During the first
day at sea
Fog found that
the sailors do
not like Speedy,
who treated them
badly.
He talked
to them, paid
them some money,
and they agreed
to arrest Speedy
and go to
Liverpool in England,
with Fog as their
captain. From
Liverpool Fog could
catch a train
to London, and
get there just
in time !
Fix did
not know what
to think.
Fog was
spending more and
more money.
Fog knows
all about ships,
and he is
a real good captain.
Maybe he
is not going
to
The weather
was good in
the first days
of the trip.
Then a storm
started. It was
really an HURRICANE,
but Fog took
the small ship
through it safely.
They passed
half the way
to England, and
they were still
on schedule !
Another problem
came few days
later. The chief
engineer came to Fog to
tell him that
they are almost
without coal for
the ship engines.
Because they
went at top
speed, they burned
all the coal.
And the way
to Liverpool is
longer than the
way to France !
Fog sent
Paspartu to bring
Speedy from his
cell.
--"Were are
we now ?" Shouted
Speedy
--"We are
getting close to
--"You are
a pirate !" screamed
Speedy
--"Listen," Said
Fog, "I want
to buy your
ship"
--"No way,"
cried Speedy
--"Than I will
have no choice but to put it on
fire !" said Fog, "we
do not have
any more coal.
I must use
all the upper
part of the
ship, which is
made of wood,
to run the
engine."
--"But this
ship cost me 50 thousand
Dollars !" cried Speedy
--"I will
give you 60 thousand," said
Fog, and started
to take the
money out from
his bag.
Speedy could
not refuse to
such an offer. He
will get lot of
money, enough to
buy a new ship, and
even keep the
metal body of
it and the engine for
himself !
They started
to break all
the woods parts
of the ship.
The cabins, the
kitchen, the furniture,
all went to
the fire of the
engine ………
At
In order
to win the
bet, and to
finish the trip
around the world
in 80 days,
Fog had to reach
his club in
London before 8:45
pm on this
same day !
He could
still get on
the train to
London on time
and win !
But at
this moment Fix
put his hand
on Fog's shoulder
and said :
--"Are you
really Mr. Fileas
Fog ?"
--"Yes, of
course"
--"In the
name of the
Queen of England,
I arrest you !"
And he
showed Fog the
arrest order.
