Chapter   5

Paspartu  disappears.....................Fog  spends  more  money……

…..…….A  cannon   is  fired !............

 

 

Next  morning,   Fog  was   surprised  to  find  that  Paspartu  is  not  in  the  hotel,  but,  as  always,  he  did  not  get  exited.

He  knew  the   KARNATIK  will  leave  around  8  am,  in  order  to  catch  the  morning  tide  that  will  get  her  from  the  harbor  to  the  open  sea.

 

In  the  harbor  Fog  was  surprised  again.

The  KARNATIK  left  already  last  night !   And    Paspartu    was  not  there !

 

Then    Fix  arrived.       

You   must  remember  that   Mr.  Fog  never  met  Fix  before.   Fix  was

following  him ,  and  he  spoke  only  to  Paspartu.

 

"Excuse  me",    he  asked  Fog,    "I  am  looking   for  your  servant,  Paspartu."

"He   disappeared  since  yesterday,"   said  Auda.  Maybe  he  left  last  night  on  the  KARNATK."

"Are  you  also  looking  for  the  KARNATIC ?     It  left  last  night !"

 Fix  could  not  hide  how  happy  he  was  when  he  added   "I  also  missed  it.   Now  we  have  to  wait  8  days  for  the  next  ship !"

 

He  was  really  happy.  Eight  days  must  be  enough  for  the 

arrest-order  to  arrive !

 

But   Fog,    very  calmly,  said:

"I  am sure  we  can  find  another  ship  going  to  Yokohama."

He  took Auda  by  the  arm  and  started  to  look  around  the  Harbor.

 

One  of the captains  asked  Fog:

"Are you  looking for  a ship,  sir ?  I have  a very  good ship,  and  I am ready to sail  now !"

"I  want you  to take  me to  Yokohama  in  Japan"  Said  Fog.

"Oh,  that’s impossible"  Said  the sailor.  It  is  too far  for  such  a  small  ship.  And  there  are storms  in  the  open  sea  now."

"I   will pay  you  one  hundred  pounds  per  day,"  said  Fog,  "And   if  we  get  on  time,  you  will  get  a  prize  of   another  two  hundreds.  

I  must   catch  in  Yokohama   the  ship  for  San-Francisco."

Then  the captain   had  an  idea.   He told  Fog  that  the  ship  to 

San-Francisco   is  leaving  first  from  Shanghai,  in  China,   before  going  to  Yokohama.

The  way  to  Shanghai   is  shorter,  and   it  is  going  along  the  coast,  and  not  in  the  open  sea.  He  was   sure   he  can  get  there  on time.

 

Fix   was  standing  near  and  heard  the  conversation.  He  was  so  happy  that  Fog  is  stuck  in  Hong-Kong,  and  now  managed  to  go  again.   It  seemed  there  is  no  way  to  stop  this  man !

 

The  captain  said  they  can  leave  in  one  Hour.    Fog,  being  a  real  gentleman,  offered  Fix  to  come  with  them,  so  he  will also  catch  the  ship  to  San-Francisco  on time……………………….

 Fix  did  not have  a  choice.     He  was  going  to  follow  Fog  all  the  way  back  to  England,  and  to  arrest  him  there.   He  only   hoped  Fog  will  waste  all  the  money  on  the  way.

Fix  thought  that  Fog,  although  a thief,  is  a  good  guy……….

 

"Are  you  looking  for  a  ship  Sir ?"

The  captain  went  to  get  food,  water  and  supplies  for  the  trip.

Auda  was  worried  about  Paspartu.  She  remembered  that  he  saved  her  life.

Fog  went  with  Auda  to  the  British  consul.   He  gave  a description  of  Paspartu,  and  left  a  sum  of  money  to  help  him  go  back  to  England.

 

The  small ship,  TANKADERE,   left  Hong-Kong,  carrying   on  it  Auda,  Fog,  Fix,   the  captain,  Bunsbi  and  four  sailors.   They  had  four  days   to  get  to  Shanghai.

They  sailed  fast  between  the  islands.  The TANKADERE   was a sail-ship.  It  did  not have  an  engine,  and  it  used only the  force of  the wind.   They  were lucky.  The wind  was  good,  and it  blew  exactly  in  the  right  direction.

On  the  second  day  the  wind became  stronger.  It looked like  a  storm  is  coming.  Heavy  rain started.

 

 

The  ship   TANKARDE   In  the  storm.

 

"It  is  a  typhoon ***"   Said  captain Bunsby. 

 

*** TYPHOON  is  similar  to  HURRICANE.   It  is  a  very  dangerous  storm  even  for  a  large  ship.

 

 

"What  is  the  direction  of  the storm ?"  Asked  Fog

"It  is  coming  from  the  south",   Answered  Bunsby.

"Very  good !"  Said  Fog  calmly.  "It  will help  us  to  get  faster to  Shanghai !"

-"But  it  is  dangerous.   We  better  find  shelter in  one  of  the  harbors"

"I  know  only  one   harbor.  Shanghai"  Said  Fog.

 

The  storm was  heavy,  the  little  ship  went  up and  down  on  the  huge  waves.   Fix  was  vomiting  all the  time,  and  could  not  eat  or  drink.

He  felt  real  bad.  But  Fog,  Auda,  the  captain  and  sailors  were  feeling  well.

 

After  another  day  the  storm  ended.   They  lost  lot  of  time,  and  they  approached  Shanghai  in  the  evening.

 

From  a  distance  they  the   saw  a  very  big  ship  leaving  the  harbor.

It  was  the   CAPTAIN  GRANT    on  its  way  to  Yokohama  and  San-Francisco.

 

They  missed  it  !

 

But  Fog  did  not  give  up.

"Load  the  cannon !"   He  ordered.

The  ship  had  a  small  cannon  for  use in  emergencies.

"put  the  flag  at  half  mast"---This was  also  an emergency sign.

Fog  raised  his  hand  and  called :

 

          "FIRE !!! "

 

A  loud  explosion  was  heard,  and  white  smoke rose from  the  cannon.
