Chapter 3
Paspartu get into trouble……….How much
cost an elephant ?...........
Adventures in the forests
of
markets, and interesting
people dressed in strange
colorful dresses.
Fog
had to cross
the whole country
by train, in
order to reach
the city of Calcutta,
on the east
side.

It was
---Fog
told Paspartu to buy
some clothes, and to
meet him at the
train station before
8 pm. He himself went
to the station, got the tickets, and entered a
restaurant. He ordered
some meat, and
got something very
strange and very
spicy. It's color was
orange, and it
smelled like peanuts,
but he ate it and
waited for the evening.
He did not
have any interest
to see the
wonders of Bombay.
---Fix ran
to police station.
There he found
that the arrest-order
did not arrive
yet. He heard
before Fog and
Paspartu talking. He knew
they planned to
take the train
to Calcutta, and decided
to follow them.
---Paspartu finished his
shopping, and decided
to visit one
of the temples. Many people
where inside. All was
decorated with gold
and full with
flowers and candles.
Paspartu looked around,
he never saw something like
this ! ***

When Hagith and me
made the trip

Suddenly, some tall, strong people
with black beards
jumped on him. They started
to beat him,
took his shoes
from his feet,
and threw him to
the street. Paspartu started to
ran away. He lost
the package of
new clothes. Breathless he
arrived to the
train station five
minutes before
When Paspartu told Fog
what happened, Fog
said:
"Next time
remember that you
can enter Indian
temples only barefoot !"
Fog and Paspartu
boarded the train.
Fix heard what happened to
Paspartu, and in
last minute he
decided not go
with them.
Instead, he went again to
the police station.
He
told them that
the person who
entered the temple with
shoes, which is
against the law,
ran away to
Calcutta. His name
is Paspartu, and
he should be arrested
there, with his
master Fog !
The train left
the station. Paspartu, ashamed of
himself, sat besides
Fog. He was bare
foot ! Sitting with them
in the cabin
was
General
Francis, the British
officer that played
cards with Fog
on the ship. The train went
through forests and
villages.
The trip
to Calcutta was
long, three days
and nights, and
they were going
to sleep on the train.
The chairs were
opened at night
and converted into beds.
On the
morning of the
second day they entered
into the mountaints.
Suddenly, the train
stopped. Paspartu Fog
and Francis got up.
"what
time is it ?" Asked Francis
Paspartu looked at his
watch.
"It is
3 in the
morning" he said.
"No", Said
Fog, "It is already
They
tried to explain
to Paspartu that
he must move
his watch forward
as they are going
east. From London
to India the
time changed already
by 5 hours !
In fact,
everyone could see
it cannot be
But now there was
no time for explanations. They wanted to
know why the train
stopped.
The
driver of the
train explained: "This
part of the
railway is not
finished yet. There
is a section of
50 miles you have
to cross yourself ! Try to find
some carriage or
horses in this
village. "
They all went
to village, but
could not find anything.
The other passengers
already took everything.
Suddenly
Paspartu called: "Mr.
Fog, look what
I found !"
When Fog looked
around, he was surprised.

Fog,
Francis, And
the Indian
that sold to
Fog
the elephant |
Paspartu
found a huge
elephant !
Fog
wanted to buy the elephant. With
it he can
cross the 50
miles in less
than 2 days,
and still get
to Calcutta on
time to catch the
ship to Hong-Kong.
Remember,
he had 2
spare days that
he saved on
the way from
Egypt to Bombay !
Fog
offered the Indian who
owned the elephant
200 pounds, but
the Indian said: "NO"
He
offered 500, than
one thousand, and
the Indian still
refused
to sell. At last, Fog
said: "Two thousands !"
And the Indian
said: "OK".
With
the elephant came
also a driver !
(The elephant did
not take orders
from anybody else.)
Fog asked Francis
to join them.
They
bought some food
and water in
the village, Paspartu
got a pair
of shoes, and
they started their
way into the
forest.

Paspartu and
the driver on the elephant. Fog
is in the
basket, Francis, on the other side. |
Fog
was sitting deep
in his basket.
He did not care
about the two
thousand pounds. He was
sure to get
to
Francis
was in the
second basket, on
the other side
of the elephant.
He was thinking: "What
a strange fellow
is Mr. Fog. To
spend so much
money, and to
make such a
difficult trip just
for a bet ?"
And
Paspartu, he was
on top the
elephant, and tried
hard not to
fall down. He started to
like the trip.
He decided to
make all effort
to help Fog
to go around
the world in
80 days !
The driver knew well
the way. In the evening they
stopped
For
a good rest,
and Paspartu prepared
dinner for all.
They were very tired,
and slept well.
They hardly noticed
the roars of
the tigers and
the laughing of
the monkeys.
In the morning
they continued their way
in forest.
Suddenly the elephant
stopped. He was
afraid, and did not want to go.
They heard people singing, and
music.
When
they looked through
the trees they
saw many people
in white and
red robes going
in a long line. They carried a
big
frightening statue. It had
four hands, long
red tongue and
black hair.
"This is the
Goddess KALI ", whispered
Francis. "She is
the Goddess of
love and death.
These people are
very dangerous,
we must be very
careful. They don’t
let strangers to
see their ceremonies."
|
|
The
prince in his
coffin, and
his wife carried
by the priests of KALI. |
Behind
the statue, some
people, or priests,
carried a dead
body, and others
carried a young
woman. They approached a
small temple.
Francis explained:
"This is the
funeral of the prince.
He died few days
ago. The young
woman is his
wife. They are
going to kill her tomorrow,
and burn the
two bodies. This is
their cruel custom."
"Poor woman", said
Paspartu.
"We must
save her", said
Fog.
"How can
we save her ?" Asked Francis. "And what
about your schedule ?
You still have
to catch the
train to
Fog
looked at his
watch. "I still
have 11 extra
hours", I think
we can do it
!"
They
planned to wait
until the guards
will fall asleep, and
than enter the temple,
but the guards
were awake all
night. They tried
to break the
back wall of the
temple, but it was
too strong.
Finally
Fog said: "Lets
wait until the
morning and see what
happens ! Maybe we can
still do something."
Paspartu
was very proud
about Fog who
did not want
to leave the
woman to die.
Paspartu also had
an idea, and
he went alone
toward the temple.
In
the morning they
saw that the
priests put the
body of the prince
in front of the
temple, ready to burn it.
Than they pushed
the young woman
out. They were
going to kill her !
Francis
had to hold
Fog, who almost
ran into the
crowd in order
to save the
woman.
At this moment everybody
started to scream.
The
dead prince got
up, lifted the
woman in his hands
and ran into
forest ! The crowd
and the priests
were so frightened,
they did not
dare to move.
The
dead prince, who
became alive, with
the woman in his
hands, approached Fog,
Francis and the elephant
driver.
"LET'S RUN !" He said.
It
was Paspartu himself,
who tricked the
priests and saved
the young woman !!!
They all jumped
on the elephant.
The driver gave
the elephant an
order to run
fast.
The priests found soon
that they were
cheated, and started
to run and shoot. But they
could not catch
them. The elephant was
very fast.
Only
one bullet made
an hole in
Fog's hat !
